Summary: New release, Google Summer of Code projects, and little more about the OpenSUSE project

THE most major development this week (other than what was mentioned last night) is probably this release of the fifth milestone of OpenSUSE 11.2, which was not covered so widely.

The OpenSuSE developers have just announced the release of 11.2 Milestone 5.

GSoC was mentioned again because of its contribution to OpenSUSE [1, 2]. There are setbacks however.

Today I got e-mail from Jeff Shantz regarding his project, where he told me, that he is resigning from GSoC due some personal issues I should not probably write in this blog about, so, just for openSUSE community to know, there is not going to be YaST education module completed by Jeff at the end of the GSOC program.

One person from OpenSUSE shares this new collage of OpenSUSE users.

Today I stumbled upon blogpost by Andreas Gohr called identi.ca Mosaic. He took 30.000 avatars of identi.ca users and created a mosaic from them using the metapixel software. What a great idea! How about doing something similar for openSUSE folks?

Here is the high-resolution picture, probably made with the GIMP plug-in which was used to achieve such collages in the past. It died due to software patents, but the code lives on.

Nat Friedman wrote about the desktop now that exciting new things are being done, even with sub-notebooks and appliances in mind. Mirrors for OpenSUSE-Education are shared publicly and KDE 4.3 is coming to OpenSUSE

Get the latest KDE hot off the presses! The KDE Project announced the stable KDE 4.3 release this week, and openSUSE users can get the goods right away.

Enlightenment for the latest OpenSUSE is on its way too.

It’s scheduled to release Enlightenment-DR17 Desktop Shell as a Christmas gift and we glad to announce the update of SOAD to the version 3.2.0. It’s a current openSUSE-11.1 with all updates and Enlightenment set as a prime GUI.

Among the many technical writings about OpenSUSE there's also Stephan and Marcus improving USB support. The second beta of OpenOffice.org 3.1.1 (it is in RC now) is already available for OpenSUSE and Ben Kevan takes care of multiple Chrome builds, noting that a new version of Wine is also available (Chrome for Windows runs well in Wine).

There are hardly any stories or reviews of OpenSUSE, but here is something close to it.

Currently, I’m running openSUSE and testing the waters. I won’t be doing anything major on my system yet (just Internet-based work). If after two or so days, I still don’t like the system, then I’ll move on to another. More detailed review of openSUSE coming soon =)
