Kuhn Back in FSF Board of Directors, Addresses Cheap Shots from Microsoft MVP de Icaza

Bradley Kuhn in 2008

Summary: News about the FSF, Mono, Novell, Microsoft and the attempted move by some of the latter to embrace "open core" at the expense of Free software

IN a new blog post, Bradley M. Kuhn from the SFLC announces that he will be getting back to the FSF.

Finally, I was glad to meet (or meet again) so many FSF supporters at LibrePlanet, and I deeply hope that I can serve our shared goal well in this additional role.

Some of the discussion that came later was interesting. Kuhn announced in Identica that he "was elected to !fsf Board of Directors [...] Glad to have official role w/ FSF again". Many people congratulated him. One person, Gerard Braad, talked to him about .NET/Mono developers and said that "@migueldeicaza responded on twitter http://twitter.com/migueldeicaza (but the @bkuhn on twitter is not bradley on identica)" (de Icaza does not use Identica).

“...most of the .NET developers out there who have no sense of what FOSS means.”
      --Gerard Braad
He added [1, 2] some observations such as "what I meant with 'they' is most of the .NET developers out there who have no sense of what FOSS means. There are many!"

It is probably worse than that because those developers tend to dislike Free software. Take de Icaza for example. He is spitting in everybody's well or biting the hand that once fed him (and gave him an award). As Kuhn puts it, "Miguel's merely saying !fsf 's criticisms are "crap" isn't responsive. Doesn't say why we shouldn't worry about the issues raised."

Meanwhile we've found this new post titled "MojoPortal on SLES 11 with Mono Extension"

MojoPortal (http://www.mojoportal.com) is an open source, cross-platform*, content management system (CMS) using ASP.NET as the web development language. Its intended for personal and commercial use and license under the Common Public License 1.0. You can read more on the motivations of the author here.

Novell's Sandy, one of the notable sources of Mono at GNOME (Tomboy for starters), looks for more developers. Mono is like "open core" and speaking of which, our suspicion that Canonical's new COO had something to do with an ODF FUD spreader and software patents lobbyist [1, 2, 3, 4, 5] from Gartner coming to OSBC may get some credence from this new post which says: "Last week at OSBC I attended an interesting discussion between Matt Asay and Gartner’s Brian Prentice, much of which was spent discussing the relative merits of open core and pure open source business strategies."

What are they doing to "open source" at OSBC [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]? Novell was there too.
