      • University of TorontoWhen we take things out of service, I should write up how they worked

I've come to think that might be a mistake, since there have been more than a one or two times when we've wanted to look back to see how we did something in the past. Now, I think that when we take some significant system out of service, we should strongly consider doing an an 'end of service how it worked' writeup. We should do this right after the system goes out of service, while we still vividly remember all of the details of how it worked, but at the same time it's not going to change (because it's out of service, which is the drawback of writing 'how it works' documentation while something is in service (ask me how I know)).

Fast-forward to 2023, and I love 60 FPS (or 59.94, or whatever it is). You get so much more information and clarity, especially from streamers who are typing on a console or playing a game. It makes intuitive sense in that context, given we’re used to 60+ FPS on our monitors. But I’ll even watch live action at that framerate and appreciate the extra level of detail.

      • WINE Project (Official)The future of WineConf

        Folks,

As you may have noticed, we haven't been making any plans for WineConf this year. Jeremy has been busy preparing his retirement, and I haven't been pushing it either, mostly because I'm not convinced that we want to continue the traditional WineConf model.

Even though we skipped a few years because of the pandemic, attendance at last year's WineConf wasn't great. We also suggested meeting at FOSDEM in February, like we did in previous years, but essentially no one showed up.

So I'm wondering whether there is still enough interest for a traditional WineConf, or whether we should try a different approach, to maybe capture some of the recent excitement around gaming and downstream uses of Wine in general.

I'd like to hear your thoughts. Should we do a Proton conference, or join some kind of gaming-related event? Do people even want to travel to conferences anymore? What kind of event would you be interested in, particularly those of you who don't show up to the traditional WineConf?

In theory, the researchers say bad actors could potentially exploit vulnerabilities to seize full control of a satellite and send it crashing into others causing a violent chain reaction of space debris.

Few things are as satisfying to watch as a good retrocomputer restoration project – we’re always happy to see someone bring a rusty old Commodore, Apple or Atari back to life. On Wednesday the European Union approved a draft of the Cyber Resilience Act, which is supposed to make software safer. The good news is that this approval doesn’t make the act law — not yet, anyway.

What’s happened so far is that the draft legislation has been approved by the EU’s Industry, Research, and Energy Committee (ITRE). From here, the proposal moves into what the EU calls the “trilogue” phase, where it gets discussed with the EU Parliament in advance of a vote.

Once upon a time, Unix computers were slow, system calls were slow, Unix kernels only cached simple things, RAM was small relative to the size of directories, $PATH often contained many directories, and your filesystems were on slow spinning rust. In that environment, 4.2 BSD's csh(1) introduced a feature where it would maintain an internal map (a 'hash') from command names like 'make' to the full path it had found for them in your $PATH. rather than search through $PATH each time. This csh feature is command hashing, and it was copied into (some) later shells, including Bash, so that they all cached the file path of commands.
