dark corner of the pub
Im sitting in the dark corner of the pub. Waiting... For? Its now several weeks and no solution, no answers to questions i would like to see resolved. Its like sitting in front of a terminal and waiting for update to happen... But there will be no update if you never type in "apt install wifi". If you happen to be in a linux environment and type this command, you will see - it wont happen. But if you type this command the system might suggest some other command. And this is a step forward... So go on and type stuff like "apt help" or some other crap that comes to your mind. Te computer might come up with a better suggestion... Yes the computers are smart this days... Much smarter... User friendlier and willing to help out... Just type! and press enter - yea don't forget that "enter" (return). While going through all this options in my mind, eyes half closed, not moving, but being alert i notice in the corner of my sight a familiar face enter the pub.

Divorce!
My dad has finally, finally told my mother that he'd like a divorce. And understandably she is quite upset about it. I love her very much and I would not want to see her go, but there is a chance that she will move back to Japan, as there are other family members there. And I will be staying here in the west with my sister and dad.
Somehow as cruel as it sounds, I find myself sometimes imagining how home life would be if my mother was not around. I know I would cry sometimes, for sure. My mother has warm bony hands and when I was little she used to sing to me. Maybe I will ask her to record some of her singing, so that I don't forget entirely how she sounds.

hello world
Or rather, hello pub! I've recently gotten back into Linux and am slowly trying to decouple myself from Google and m$, at least in my personal life.

Why this blog?
I've always loved keeping either photos, small texts, notes, digitally or analog, about love and moments of gratitude. I love to take photos - I have two Fuji cameras ironically that I don't take enough photos with, plus my iPhone, which I do use majority of the time (as I assume many of us do). I do miss keeping physical items and sometimes hang onto things like ticket stubs, analog photos, booklets etc. This time around I'll try this small blog as I love the concept - keep it simple and private-ish. Kind of the modern day version of LiveJournal, except that I'm much older and wiser, and realize how public the internet is.

Reading is hard
I like reading, ostensibly. I like the idea of it. But I don't do it very often these days.
Maybe it's just that I grew up in an age where video games were cheaper than water, or where everyone wants to get to the punchline in fourteen seconds or less, or or or... There's a million ways to dump on the media today in an effort to idealize the media of the past.
In my grand efforts towards ridding myself of the Bad Things to live the Good Life, I've gone back and forth on whether or not things like "reading" are better or worse than the forms of media I grew up with. Is reading the book better than the really engaging video essay someone shared on YouTube about it? Are video games more or less "intellectually stimulating" than books? Or even movies? Does it matter?

Starlink
I rely on cellular internet where I live. Lately, the throughput has been worse than usual. Especially for this time of year! Normally I have a pretty consistent two bars of signal and am able to stream video and even hold voice calls, but lately it has been extremely high latency. When browsing Gemini got to be too much of a struggle I decided to give Starlink a try. Cellular and satellite are the only options where I live. I should note, I can’t actually rely on a cell phone where I live, I have to use VoIP because the reception is so poor that only the stationary base station is able to get a consistent signal, regular devices fall off and lose signal all the time.

Why I Blocked Bing, Yandex, and Other High-Profile Crawlers
A couple of days ago I blocked Bing, Yandex, and some others from crawling and indexing my website.
My rationale for blocking bots and crawlers is simple. If I can use the crawler’s resulting product for free, they can crawl my site for free. If I cannot use it for whatever reason, they cannot take my data. SEO bots are the worst, and will be blocked immediately.
And I block all misbehaving or malicious crawlers, of course. Misbehaving could be not requesting `robots.txt` beforehand to see, if they are allowed to crawl anything. Malicious could be checking for security holes or other shenanigans which disturb and/or threaten my site.

New Site Colors
I should have been working on something else today, but a series of events lead me down a path of reworking how I implemented my themes here on https://d.moonfire.us/ and https://fedran.com/.
I have not updated the color themes on Fedran at this point.
In specific, it was someone mentioning they didn't like my dark theme on their recently announced blogroll. Now, there is absolutely nothing wrong with someone not liking my sense of colors or even how I code websites, but a desire to change the colors has been sitting in the back of my head for a few months. That meant that the commentary reminded me of my own desires to change it and that lead into my fixating on redoing the colors.

Certificate changed as announced
I needed to change the gemini server from gmid by Omar Polo to gemserv from int80h because gmid dropped CGI support completely and I have plans to set up a CGI blog roll and a commenting system also based on CGI, so this was necessary for this purpose.
