WordPress Becoming What We Feared It Would Become
2013: Back Door (Automatic Update) in WordPress and What It Means to Techrights
Many years ago, almost 20 years ago, we used WordPress, which had built in search, based upon the underlying database (MySQL). The site was small and we enabled people to literally download all the posts in it. Within a year or two the download file became so large that we no longer had this option enabled - it would simply cripple the database, so requests would time out on the server.
Last winter we added a better search facility, we adopted practices to make the site more family-friendly (not limited to language policies), and we made a bunch of other improvements, leaving us more productive than ever before (in the sister site as well).
Earlier today we saw WordPress peddling slop some more. We're filled with relief that we left it behind. WordPress and other such bloatware (WordPress used to be fast and light) are moving in the same trajectory that GAFAM leads. █
