Novell News Summary - Part III: iFolder, Teaming 2, and Other Minor Issues

Summary: A leftover of news about Novell, accumulated over the past week

HERE goes the remainder of Novell's news for this week. Click2try, a company/site that enables testing of software before installing it, has added Novell's iFolder and spread the word using a press release. TMCNet, as usual, modified the press release slightly, then pretended it was an article. From the original:

iFolder, an Open Source project sponsored by Novell(R), is a simple and secure storage solution that helps you back up, access, and manage personal files from any location. iFolder automatically updates your local files onto a network server and synchronizes them onto other computers you use. iFolder boosts productivity by giving you and other designated users collaborative access to shared files. iFolder keeps your distributed and shared data secure through its use of secure sockets layer (SSL) technology and encryption. iFolder also provides a number of advanced features such as LDAPGroup Support and file merge.

Mail/Collaboration

Novell Teaming 2 is released and Novell's marketing people speak about it to raise awareness. A pundit from IDG ponders the possibilities that a Novell-branded Lotus would have opened.

It was almost 20 years ago that Lotus and Novell called off a deal to combine. If I recall rightly it was because one of the parties got cold feet; that was a shame because if any two companies were made for each other at the start of the 1990s, it was this pair.

But what might have happened if Lotus and Novell had done a deal? Let's hazard a guess.

Novell is now focused on Groupwise and Ken Muir is set to deliver a talk about it in Germany.

GWAVA, Novell's largest collaboration partner announces Ken Muir, Chief Technology & Strategy Officer - Workgroup as the keynote speaker for GWAVACon Berlin. Mr Muir's presentation will be delivered October 18th, 2009 at the Berlin Marriott. Mr Muir, responsible for Novell's Collaboration Strategy, will discuss Novell's role in the future of collaboration in the enterprise.

Finance

Here is an interesting little transaction that was captured by a news site:

Director of Novell Inc., Kathy Brittain White, bought 12,100 shares on 9/14/2009 at an average price of $4.78.

Management

There was just this one article about a subject that mentioned Novell by quoting a member of staff, namely:

Tracy Smith, Product Manager of Collaboration Solutions with Novell agrees and says these tools enable employees to give and take information in ways that weren't possible in the 90s. "While there needs to be some level of oversight and guidance with Enterprise 2.0 systems, the flexibility of the tool allows for very dynamic usage. Most of the tools from the 90s are file and mapped drive based. Enterprise 2.0 tools should support file sharing, but also allow and enable usage of new information creation and sharing options (like wikis and blogs)," Smith says.

People

Eric Schmidt's old role at Novell was mentioned in The Street.

As for M&A, the former Novell(NOVL Quote) CEO said that larger deals are also possible. "There may be larger acquisitions, but they really are unpredictable," he said.

It turns out now that Jim Lacey will be joined by another executive in LPI -- one who has granted many Microsoft and Novell certifications beforehand.

Mr. [Jim] Lacey noted that, in particular, Mr. Acheson has previous sales and marketing experience with such IT certifications as the CNE, SCO ACE, MCP/MCSE and MOUS and managed the Novell Authorized Educations Centers (NAECs) and Microsoft's CTECs (Microsoft Certified Technical Education Center).

Partners

Service-now.com turns out to have been integrated into an environment that includes Zenworks, but there is nothing to suggest direct contact with Novell.

Tulare County quickly and easily integrated Service-now.com with existing management applications like Novell Zenworks, RightAnswers and a home-grown time keeping system.

Novell does turn out to be a partner of Faritec.

These company delivers hardware and software solutions through tier-1 certifications with a number of technology partners, including IBM, Microsoft, HP, Symantec, Mcafee, VMWare, Novell and Qualys.

As usual, the minor mentions of Novell in press releases include the likes of Autonomy and also Pivotlink. They take pride in being associated with Novell.
