The Price of Mono

Posted in GNU/Linux, Microsoft, Mono, Novell, Windows at 5:29 am by Dr. Roy Schestowitz

Economy crisis

Summary: Follow-up to yesterday’s post about the (il)legality of Mono and some new cautionary tales

IN YESTERDAY’S post, titled "Mono and Fraud", one reader attempted to explain why Novell and Microsoft were potentially doing something illegal. Earlier today, the same reader added: “doing that for 5 years establishes to the courts a long term agreement in that regard. Under that agreement, the users of Mono and other Microsoft crap have agreed to pay Microsoft for Linux. Right now it is at the low, introductory price of 0 EUR for the end user and 135 million EUR ($200 million USD) for Novell. At the end of five years, that is in 2011, there can be no question that following the chain of supply from Microsoft to the end user that those end users owe Microsoft. The only question will be how much is paid and by whom.

In addition, other problems appear in the world of Mono. F-Spot gets slammed for ignoring critical feedback and one blog concludes with: “for the production server for the game, we aren’t convinced yet if we should continue using mono or not. Maybe we’ll release another server using Windows and then we’ll have a good performance comparison showcase.

As we showed before, Mono makes GNU/Linux look bad. It mostly helps Windows [1, 2, 3].

“I saw that internally inside Microsoft many times when I was told to stay away from supporting Mono in public. They reserve the right to sue”

Robert Scoble, former Microsoft evangelist

IIRC, Scoble was in charge of a team of astroturfers who had a search engine scanning forums for M$ related strings. If the string was used in a post, the astroturfers would rat-pack the poster. I remember spotting that phenomenon for a long time before the activities of Scoble and scum became known.

Mono serves to make GNU/Linux look bad, to tie defectors back into the M$ quagmire, and to impede use of Java. In the long term, it probably is a way make all computer users pay M$ for using the computer.

Scoble took a a shot at my post about back doors in Windows. Of course, we now know that I was right and Scoble was wrong.

    your_friend Reply:

Wow, what a sad rant. Scoble goes a long way to prove he does not know what he’s talking about while trying to distract from the issue and facts. It is hard to read without cringing for him.

A person who describes knowledge of programming and computer science as “a pissing match” should not then brag about having edited Visual Basic Programmer’s Journal. This is about as credible as saying you understand civil engineering because you have written about Tinker Toys.

His next biggest mistake is defend himself by insult rather than focusing on the issue. Had he done some critical thinking of his own, he’d have concluded that the only evidence he had was Microsoft’s word. That’s worthless in general and particularly for backdoors. Because he could not point to source code, he resorted to distraction by calling a 24 year old PhD student rude.

The biggest mistake is the hypocrisy of accusing Roy of having bad manners and being a poor advocate. Scoble’s very selective quoting serves to hide prior history and, of course, he was wrong. Backdoors are one of the biggest reasons to avoid non free software. All of us should value our privacy the same way we value free speech and other basic rights. People like Scoble, who work for the rich and powerful, might not think he benefits from a free society but he is mistaken. The power to listen in on private conversations is the power to identify and neutralize your economic and political opponents. A society without dissidents is one that rapidly falls into greater tyranny and economic ruin. That free software happens to work better than non free software most of the time is a trivial concern for short sighted people.

Apparently, Scoble’s job at the time did not require him to be factual or get things right. The rest of us should conclude that doing 500 Microsoft interviews without preparing for a single one will leave you worse than ignorant, it will leave you missinformed and wrong headed.

FUD. Non free software is demonstrably treacherous and the only solution is free software. Knowledge of these things is not so much paranoia as trust in vendor supplied solutions is intentional ignorance.

They promise “security” in exchange for erosion of control. But it remains to be seen; it’s like saying that cutting sharers off the Net would save the copyright cartel. In reality it doesn’t work that way.

    Yuhong Bao Reply:

Do you have any links on this?

The back doors? See many examples above (external references). Even Gartner admitted this a year after the Scoble rant.

I know, I am asking about the parent comment by Need Sunlight about astroturfing.

  2. SUSE is Still Pushing Microsoft Proprietary Software and Bragging About the Novell Patent Collusion With Microsoft

SUSE seems to have learned no lessons after the aftermath of its (or Novell’s) Microsoft patent scam, which had been negotiated partly by Miguel de Icaza (now working directly for Microsoft) before causing Novell to collapse and offload its patents to Microsoft (‘TikTok operandi’ or asset stripping); the past cannot be left behind if SUSE — like Novell — celebrates and perpetuates that past

  3. Release: 29 Pages of Internet Access Report About Pedophile Working for Bill Gates at His Home

As we’ve found nothing too sensitive in the document, today we’re finally disclosing and publishing the second release (first one published yesterday); this includes network addresses used on the devices of the engineer of Bill Gates, who had a laptop and external hard drives (portable) with plenty of child pornography (imagery and videos)

The illegal (attempted) confiscation of a Chinese company to distract from or compensate for Microsoft's collapse reminds us that Microsoft is only getting worse and more malicious under Nadella, who is happy to liaise with a hugely corrupt and racist regime

  6. We Don't Really Know How Many People Died With (or From) COVID-19 and How Many Will Die After Home Recovery or Release From Hospital

The coronavirus pandemic that began last year as an epidemic (COVID-19) is still a very serious problem, even half a year after its widespread arrival in Europe; it's important to emphasise the importance of not down-playing this problem (which is far from solved) because social control media is full of junk

MagicHour listed Microsoft among their clients, as we noted before, and the full (redacted for child porn reasons) name is Brett Paine. We had reached out to the employer (several of us, separately), but we never received any reply.

Sometimes people are led to believe that corporations directly and indirectly run their country; judging by the events of 4 decades ago (IBM chief becoming the American representative in Russia/Soviet Union), this is hardly a new thing and it's not a myth, either

  20. [Meme] Privilege: When They're Born Into Money That Means They Know Everything About Anything

Tens of thousands of nuclear weapons were in 'safe hands' because rich kid Tom was representing the United States in Russia (USSR at the time), having proven his skills by being born to the man who had met Hitler and made lots of money in the Third Reich

  21. IBM and the Bomb - Part IV: IBM's Watson Came Under Fire for Representing the U.S. in U.S.S.R./Russia With No Qualifications or Any Relevant Experience

There was certainly resistance to "Mr. rich man" Watson Jr. becoming a US diplomat owing to privilege (born into the 'right' family) rather than experience and/or political track record, symbolising a sort of "revolving doors" phenomenon -- namely overlap between business and politics, or money and power, respectively

  22. IBM Loves Power (and Nuclear POWER, or Expensive OpenPOWER) More Than It Loves GNU/Linux

As we noted last week, IBM is very close to Modi because it is moving a lot of its workforce to India and this can become a future liability to IBM’s reputation (or lack thereof) as a tolerant firm

  23. IBM and the Bomb - Part III: IBM's Watson Jr. Rose From Business V.I.P. to U.S. Ambassador in the Soviet Union During the Cold War (Which IBM Profited From)

Like his father, who was IBM‘s co-founder and later president of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), which helped the Nazis, Watson Jr. entered US and international politics in his later days; recently-declassified documents show us his political legacy

  24. Donald Trump's Trash Against China Helps Prop up Microsoft Monopoly and Distract From All the Microsoft Layoffs

Microsoft as a surveillance giant of the United States government isn’t a myth; it was first in the PRISM programme of the NSA (Bill Gates is a loud proponent of NSA surveillance), it took over European Skype under mysterious circumstances, and now it might be getting TikTok as a ‘gift’ from Donald Trump’s friends and the imperialists, in effect confiscating Chinese assets for full-spectrum dominance

  27. EPO Workers Are Losing Their Homes and Losing Their Time Off; It's All About So-called 'Production'

As another wave of attack on labour rights, European Patent Office (EPO) workers turn their homes into their workplaces and they no longer enjoy any real breaks from work (they work all year around, sometimes until midnight and overnight); they’re supposed to be thankful and even happy as if António Campinos does them a favour by not firing them (at least not yet) and because there’s a health crisis they should be grateful for anything thrown at them (Benoît Battistelli + disaster = Campinos)
