      • Neurodiversity Nevermind

Over the past couple years I have been slowly working on a write up in support of certain "neurodiversity" language. I've spent the last eleven years volunteering in an online mental health support group and I've seen how people have found the neurodiversity terminology and language useful to describe their experiences. But I have also seen how the neurodiversity _movement_ has erased lived experiences of neurodiverse people, those with mental health issues, and those who are assumed to be "neurotypical."

Judy Singer, who coined the specific term "neurodiverse" has stated that this is a state of the world, just like it is biodiverse. There is no "typical," for we are all part of the diversity. She even has a later writing that actually calls out the movement for some of the issues I've mentioned as well as some others.

      • MIME Lies: Indexing Plain Text files in Kennedy

I recently enabled indexing plain text files for Kennedy, my search engine. The contents of plain text files are now indexed so you can search for them.

Given the large libraries and mirrors present in Geminispace (Textfiles.com mirrors, RFCs, Amiga and Apple II archives), this adds a huge amount of content that can now be more easily discovered. 33,000+ more files are now indexed, representing about 10% of all documents!

      • The Unix Way: option manager?

Linux command-line utilities are all-over-the-place when it comes to options that can be passed. There is a lot of history, but even so, is there a better way? The idea is to have small programs that handle one task well. But how can you make a small utility when parsing the commandline is a considerable project -- one that you have to reimplement over and over?

      • Internet/Gemini

        • CAPCOM updates

Firstly, due to a file permissions error, it was not possible to submit new URLs for inclusion on CAPCOM for most of the month of June. Sorry! If you tried to submit a URL and were told "Error processing submission. Is this a valid URL?", this was the reason. The issue is fixed, it is now possible to submit URLs again, and several have already been successfully registered. So, if your earlier attempts failed, now is a perfect time to try again! In a few days on July 1st, the new maintenance script will run for the third time. This means the many capsules in CAPCOM's database which have gone permanently offline will hit "three strikes" and be reclassified as inactive. The odds of any given active feed being sampled for inclusion will then increase substantially.

        • An international aggregator

I have written (primarily for my own use) a small Gemini aggregator. Why did I need another one? I am happy with Antenna, but it lists mainly articles in English. Certainly, this is just a reflection of the proportion of languages in the Geminisphere. Occasionally articles in other languages do appear, but they are a little hard to spot. For this reason I wrote a short script. It creates a list of pages, determining the language of each one automatically using a model provided by the fastText package.

* Gemini (Primer) links can be opened using Gemini software. It's like the World Wide Web but a lot lighter.
