Techrights Statement on 'Cancel Culture' Going Out of Control
THIS statement reflects or relates to a discussion we had in IRC last night.
Over the past year we wrote a great deal on this topic, partly because we too had been subjected to the 'Cancel Culture' treatment. We were vilified, lied about, and our IRC channels got infested with criminal elements looking to "seed evidence" (for them to later point to) of foul conduct.
The term 'Cancel Culture' is connected to an abstract concept. There's no official group or a list of names. It refers to a chain of tactics and perhaps an ideology, not limited to any one cause and vulnerable/marginalised group.
The term 'Cancel Culture' is often associated with the political right, but Techrights wishes to make it abundantly clear that the targets can be anybody, irrespective of political opinions and discourse.
Sometimes the most prominent participants in this are mega-corporations, albeit hiding in the shadows (behind employees or wannabe employees).
As a leftist progressive myself, I am deeply concerned about so-called 'Cancel Culture' (a relatively new term) spinning out of control and abandoning reason. It reminds me of blasphemy laws. Instead of debating people or trying to convince them to consider another worldview there's a mob-like mentality and overly brutal approach that results in division and hatred. In some cases this is motivated by selfishness or ego (insecurities compel people to tear down others). Too many RMS wannabes and opportunists trying to replace him? "I can do better than him!" they insist. Except you didn't do anything!! You did not start GNU(/Linux). You did not make the GPL. The knives are out because of envious hyenas, seeing a man ageing and now with serious health problems. The vultures are circling. And then they move on to his friend, Eben Moglen.
'Cancel Culture' is a symptom of societal deterioration and a mental health crisis. Galileo's days are back. █
