The Year's Last Day: Another Leap for GNU/Linux
The estimate for this month has just jumped to 3.81% worldwide (GNU/Linux, not counting ChromeOS):
THE last day of the year is upon us and what a great year it has been for GNU/Linux adoption, set aside other aspects that may seem a lot less encouraging (what IBM did to RHEL, for instance, is a colossal regression).
Gentoo released some very big news, perhaps looking to capitalise on a changing market. Remember that ChromeOS is based on Gentoo. Last month ChromeOS was measured at 3.71% market share worldwide (for desktops and laptops).
If one combines ChromeOS and GNU/Linux, then we're not far from the point where 1 in 10 desktops/laptops runs some kind of GNU/Linux. For comparison's sake, Apple OS X is measured at about 16% this month and Apple has real problems (Wall Street isn't reality; the same is true for Microsoft).
It seems possible if not likely that by the end of next year GNU/Linux (including ChromeOS) will exceed 10% "market share". █
