Sentiment at Red Hat Amid Rumours of Mass Layoffs (12 Months After the Last Wave)

A loudspeaker

WE recently wrote a number of short articles about rumours of Red Hat layoffs [1, 2] and we're still observing the situation.

Here is a recent article, which we cited a few hours ago:

Red Hat tries on a McKinsey cap in quest to streamline techies' jobs: Mutterings of alarm are emerging from the cloisters of Red Hat after the world's largest management consultancy was hired to help the IBM subsidiary focus engineers on their highest-value work.

From the comments (ranked):

The fact McKinsey think that AI makes developers 10x more productive and will lead to developers being jobless within 5 years tells you all you need to know about their understanding of software development.

Lots more (that is informative) in there.

Meanwhile in the grapevine, where I am merely a spectator (not participating):

They are going to integrate RH into IBM. RH has not meet financial targets so no more standalone the IBM rto rules will go into effect and large layoff coming; They don't dare. You don't bite the hand that feeds you. Red Hat has carte blanche. Feeds or bleeds ?

Talking about "AI" in the blog every other day (and promoting Microsoft's proprietary junk) won't help Red Hat any more than it helped Novell.

Red Hat under IBM has embraced openwashing (Open Source as a label did not lead to Software Freedom, it just helps proprietary software companies with their "clown" services rebrand and engage in openwashing without changing their practices). Creating some "Open Source" "portal" or Microsoft GitHub account isn't the way.

An alternative is being proposed by the man behind the Open Source Definition.
