the creative act
i finished "the creative act" by rick rubin a few days ago. this is not a review. just wanted to note down a few thoughts and quotes. - i didn't write it down exactly, but in an attempt to disarm the fear/perfectionism about creating, he said something like "the work is an expression of a current self, a snapshot in time". meaning you can't do it wrong, whatever you do will be what it needs to be, and also will not represent Who You Are for ever and ever, so you don't have to try and do it Just Right. i don't have these fears, but it did resonate with me.

MNT Pocket Reform
Hooray! After over a year of patience the cutest and coolest computer I've ever owned arrived. It's heavy, quirky and stubborn but oh I really like the feel of this thing. The usability of this machine is a lot better than I expected and the keyboard (columns of kailh choc white switches) is very nice and makes up for the tiny screen, which is actually very clear and sharp.

Gemini and Content Length
Gemini is rife with discussions about missing features and options that, if only solderpunk had enough foresight to include, would surely make the protocol render the modern Web unnecessary. I don't want this post to be another persuasive essay drowning in the mire, but I do want to make one obswrvation.
Out of all the features the Gemini protocol forgoes, the one I find most interesting is content length. Gemini was conceived as a single-request protocol: once the server sends a response code and optional response body, it closes the connection and sends a TLS close_notify. This implies to me that Gemini requests normally expect the server to close thw connection first, and if so, the server would likely know ahead of time how much data is meant to be sent to the client and could relay that information in a response header.

Even Here, Huh
I checked my TC email this morning for the first time in at least a week (being very busy working on my forever-project recently), and sat staring stupidly for a moment at an email advertising something to do with casinos. Luckily, this wasn't sent to me personally - it was to a TC mailing list - but it still felt like a bit of a shock, Gemini still feeling like something apart from the rest of the internet, something free from all the people who would happily make your online experience worse for the 0.00001% chance you'll follow up on whatever they're hawking.

* Gemini (Primer) links can be opened using Gemini software. It's like the World Wide Web but a lot lighter.
