Loss of Technical Merit(ocracy)
WE HAVE often complained about the skills of Computer Science being watered down, sometimes even replaced by buzzwords, gimmicks, and corporate training for things like Clown Computing, i.e. proprietary GUIs. Apparently some university in California let a person with no Computer Science background teach "security" just because he keeps licking Microsoft's boots, not because he understands or pursues real security. That means that Computer Science students pay extortionate tuition fees to learn from phonies and the diplomas they receive may be worthless. Dr. Andy Farnell complained about this as far back as 3 years ago, based on what he saw at the university where he worked (crossposted here as well). Aalto University also went astray.
Recently I checked the syllabus at some local universities to see if they're teaching buzzwords instead of computer basic. The worse universities sell buzzwords and one can assume they give "buzzword diplomas" to students, resulting in bad things like what happened to BBC this morning. █
