What Matters More Than "Market Share"
Two weeks ago we pointed out that in the US GNU/Linux "proper" (not ChromeOS) is measured by statCounter at over 5% for the first time. Earlier this week we saw several sites saying the same thing. In IRC, one person brought this one up (there are others).
It does not surprise me that GNU/Linux is growing. I've used it since I was a teenager and saw how it amplified productivity. Not just for me, also for people around me. Using GNU/Linux was a pragmatic choice, not ideological (I had not yet heard of the FSF). It didn't have marketing and Microsoft weaponised its budget to constantly attack the reputation of GNU/Linux (spreading myths which even back then were manifestly false).
Smart countries move to GNU/Linux. That's further accelerated by political affairs in the US, including meddling against judges in Europe.
Let's see how long it takes for GNU/Linux "proper" (not ChromeOS) to exceed 10% in the US. If one combines GNU/Linux "proper" and ChromeOS, then it already reached and crossed that threshold last year. If one adds Android, then "Linux" is already the "majority platform". But again, Android isn't freedom, Android is Google or GAFAM.
The goal is freedom, not "market share". █
