  • Summer is here

    Finally, it seems summer is starting here in Finland. It's the first truly warm day, a pleasant 25 C (78 F). I'm enjoying a relaxing Sunday sitting by the grill. Sausages and chicken wings sizzle on the fire, their delicious aroma wafting my way.

    The kids are running around on the lawn, spraying water at each other and belting out songs from Frozen. (Yeah that's still a thing.) They are getting increasingly impatient for the sausages.

  • Mapping the block management territory

    When talking about England and Wales' leasehold block management issue, there is often a massive conversational disconnect. This is because there is more variation in arrangements than is sometimes appreciated; people might take a one-dimensional view of a three-dimensional space.

    The result is that people will propose "solutions" that would work for some of situations but are a financial death-threat to innocent parties in others. So it's important to get a fuller picture out there. Otherwise it's like trying to regulate road traffic starting from the assumption that only cars use roads, and then throwing up one's hands in frustration when anyone mentions lorries, buses and bicycles.

  • Please don’t let me be misunderstood

    People cancel each other for one of two things, right? Either they’re suspected of having done something bad, something they’re denying but the allegations are credible. Or, and this is so starkly different: they are pundits baldfacedly spouting evil. They’re using their platform and their megaphone to stoke the flames of hate and persecution and oppression. They’re not denying it, they’re proud of it. We can’t treat these two things the same.

    But from that second in the garden, we humans were all cursed with foot-in-mouth disease. People say misunderstandable things or there’s hearsay or there’s “can you believe they allegedly said such-and-such (or so I’ve been told)”.
