Wired ☛ The US Grid Attack Looming on the Horizon
For years, cybersecurity professionals, watchdogs, and government agencies have warned that a malicious cyberattack on the US power grid could be devastating. With ample evidence that state-sponsored hacking groups are eyeing the decentralized and deeply vulnerable power grid, the risk is more acute than ever.
Case in point: Hackers, believed to be linked to the Chinese government, spent years exploiting vulnerabilities in critical infrastructure across the mainland United States and Guam to obtain access to their systems. The operations, dubbed Volt Typhoon, could have used this access to shut down or disconnect parts of the American power grid—throwing millions into the dark. The effort was, luckily, disrupted and the vulnerabilities patched. Still, it is an unnerving illustration of just how vulnerable the electric system truly is.

The Guardian UK ☛ 100,000 UK taxpayer accounts hit in £47m phishing attack on HMRC
HM Revenue and Customs has lost £47m after a phishing scam breached tens of thousands of tax accounts, a group of MPs has heard.
Two senior civil servants at the tax authority told the Treasury committee on Wednesday that 100,000 people had been contacted, or were in the process of being contacted, after their accounts were locked down in what the officials said was an “organised crime” incident that began last year.
Taxpayers affected would suffer “no financial loss”, said John-Paul Marks, HMRC’s chief executive.
He told the committee: “It’s about 0.2% of the PAYE population, around 100,000 people, who we have written to, are writing to, to notify them that we detected activity on their PAYE account.”

The Record ☛ Ukrainian police arrest hacker who used hosting firm's servers to mine cryptocurrency
Ukrainian police, with assistance from Europol, have arrested a 35-year-old man accused of hacking into thousands of user accounts at an international hosting company and using its infrastructure to illegally mine cryptocurrency, authorities said Wednesday.
The suspect, a native of the central Ukrainian city of Poltava, had been conducting cyberattacks since at least 2018, police said. He allegedly gathered information from open sources to identify vulnerabilities in the systems of various international companies.
According to investigators, the hacker gained unauthorized access to more than 5,000 user accounts belonging to an unnamed global hosting provider that rents out servers to businesses operating websites and online platforms. Once inside, he allegedly deployed virtual machines on the company’s infrastructure to mine cryptocurrency without permission.
