Growing Our Reach
This site probably went "mainstream" - by standards of a "tech site" at least - a very long time ago, but its potential for reach is limited by the scope of coverage, the Technical Jargon (which includes Free - as in freedom or Four Freedoms - software), human capacity limits etc. It's not about politics or football or celebrities or something even remotely like that. It'll never reach millions of unique readers per day because worldwide there aren't over a million people who follow these topics closely enough - just like scientific journals typically publish papers in very niche areas of research, with finer sub-topics that maybe occupy and interest just hundreds or at most thousands of researchers worldwide (many of them know one another by name and met one another several times at conferences).
We don't plan to write bland pieces that are of a "hoi polloi" nature; it would defeat the purpose or the aim of this site. However, last week one particular article did in fact reach a broader audience - we assume it went "viral" in some social control media/network.
Our goal was never "hits"; it was the substance. We try to accurately convey concepts and influence or inspire readers. Compared to the World Wide Web, Geminispace has a very high concentration of people (proportion of the userbase) who care about, understand, and pursue topics we cover. █
