      • linking atomic notes

In order to establish (germane) links to existing notes a YTer suggested making use of a North, South, East, and West method of linking atomic notes. I suppose these spatial coordinates provide an easy way to enumerate a set of standard links between new information and information already known.

      • fero fati

Overall, stoicism as a philosophy is interesting, but it’s a little bit self-fulfilling or self-satisfying. Which, to be fair, is somewhat the point.

Amor fati - Love fate. The Greeks (or some anyway?) considered Fate to be set in stone and all events that would transpire as being chosen by the Gods. Being so chosen, they should all be considered necessary and helpful. No matter how terrible the events that transpire are, they should be viewed as the events that needed to happen and should be loved by those who experience them.

      • about that gout

A comment on the gout earlier this week: In the past I purchased an unbelievably sugary blueberry drink (Bare Naked’s Blue Machine) and it would eliminate the symptoms after about a day. That is, in the three times in the past I recall having gout, that stuff eliminated it by the following evening.

This time, not wanting the extra sugar, and still wanting to not intorduce new food ingredients faster than one a week, I ate about a quarter cup to a cup of blueberries three or four times a day for two days and by the morning of day three, I was entirely gout free. (Blueberries were last week’s food, I don’t seem to have had any skin reactions from it, but maybe I should switch to one new food every two weeks…)

      • woke up with gout

I suspect the sardines were the trigger. I think the cherries earlier in the week may have mitigated the gout symptoms, but I haven’t had any cherries since Thursday because I was worried I was falling out of ketosis.

Monday through Thursday I had sardines, cherries, heavy cream, and beef.

      • diet and carno experiments

In October of last year I had COVID and spent two weeks not doing very much. Half way through, as my health improved, I stopped eating vegetables. I witnessed a bunch of things that cast doubt on my thoughts of diet, the various afflictions I faced, and how diet affected or effected them.

      • Role-playing tips

Generosity. Unyielding unflinching generosity. Giving the other NPCs and PCs the attention they need.

You can also look for ideas in books like Hillfolk (has ideas on how a “dramatic pole” can help, i.e. being torn between two conflicting values like home life vs work) or Play Unsafe (such as playing with status, being a noble or a servant). Play Unsafe also has the wonderful tip to not be afraid to be boring or obvious when improvising, to say the first thing that comes to mind as opposed to trying to force a creative or unique idea, because what you think is gonna be boring may well be super interesting to the other players (and when it's not, it's at least something basic and fundamental they can easily build on).

      • Re: Dress v. Kilt

I guess I wasn't too clear either wⁱþr͠t how a sulu is worn: the garment is a rectangle of fabric with a small strip of cloth that goes through belt loops. Once it's wrapped around you and fastened, there's nothing else to worry about. It's most traditionally worn shirtless, even.
