Gemini version available ♊︎Microsoft Windows = Daylight Savings Shutdown
Summary: Australian shops are unable to process payments because the whole system runs Windows and there is a daylight savings shutdown
David Williams says that “NAB [National Australia Bank] has daylight savings shutdown”. According to his report, “the entire NAB systems – card transactions, Internet and telephone banking – were down. The reason the operator gave was that they were down deliberately “for daylight savings.””
According to this older report, “National Australia Bank is overhauling its network of 1600 ATMs to run on Windows XP and use IP networks.” They also use Windows on the desktop and the server.
We previously wrote about Microsoft’s daylight savings errors in this post. It’s a known problem and Microsoft is unable to cope with DST properly. █

This one day of down time probably cost the country more than it would have spent doing a hasty, unpleasant rip-and-replace of any and all Microsoft technologies with ones based on OpenSolaris or Linux. (it goes without saying that the staff boosting the Microsoft technologies are binned, too) A planned, phased roll out, with pilots and test beds could probably be accomplished for the same money less painfully within a year.
How many more jobs must be sacrificed to keep the Microsoft ideology alive there?
