Microsoft DEI Lead Blasts Company in Internal Email After Team Is Reportedly Laid Off
Microsoft is reportedly shuttering a major diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) team, according to an internal email sent by the team's leader to a significant number of Microsoft staff last week, in which the lead also accuses the company's executive leadership of "investigated and evidenced discrimination, harassment, and toxicity."
The email, first reported by Business Insider and corroborated by IGN, was sent by the former lead of one of Microsoft's key DEI teams. In it, they state that their "role and team were eliminated due to 'changing business needs' as of July 1st, 2024." IGN has reached out to Microsoft for comment as to the full extent and nature of these layoffs, but has not yet heard back.
The email goes on to assert that DEI programs are in danger not just at Microsoft, but across all businesses:
"Unofficially in my opinion, not specific to Microsoft alone, but [conservative policy plan] Project 2025 looms and true systems change work associated with DEI programs everywhere are no longer business critical or smart as they were in 2020. Hence the purposeful and strategic 3-5 year shelf life of many company's inclusion commitments post the murder of George Floyd are being reevaluated," the email reads. "And the way I see it, the timing was impeccable so businesses everywhere could reevaluate the path forward should their U.S. federal contracts be at risk if the work continues on its face."

Report: Microsoft shuts down DEI team, ex-lead claims similar programs at risk
According to IGN, Microsoft has just closed down a "major" team focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The cuts occurred last week and may signal a larger shift away from the movement which started in 2020.
Reportedly, the DEI team shut down on July 1 due to "changing business needs." In an internal email obtained by the outlet, a former lead for the team believes the cuts were done to get ahead of the Project 2025 conservative policy plan.
"True systems change work associated with DEI programs everywhere are no longer business critical or smart as they were in 2020," they wrote. "The timing was impeccable, so businesses everywhere could reevaluate the path forward should their U.S. federal contracts be at risk if the work continues on its face."
In that same email, the former lead alleges Microsoft executives were "investigated and [there was] evidence [of] discrimination, harassment, and toxicity" towards them during their tenure. Despite this, they stressed "impossible mountains were moved" by the DEI teams.

Microsoft Layoffs: Tech Giant Lays Off DEI Employees via Sending Email to Employees, Calls Team ‘No Longer Business Critical or Smart’
Microsoft followed a path of layoffs that affected the DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) team by sending an internal email to them. Several other companies have witnessed the layoffs this year, where they sacked the employees without intimating them. In silent layoffs, the company usually do not encourage the employees to speak about losing their jobs as they pay them.
Microsoft's latest attempt at a silent layoff was due to changing business needs. Business Insider reported that the layoffs followed commitments made by Microsoft and other tech companies after the George Floyd protests. Microsoft Layoffs: Firm's DEI Team Firing Spark Internal Criticism; Laid-Off Leader Criticises The Move
Microsoft Layoffs: Microsoft has fired an internal team dedicated to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), explaining that this decision was driven by "changing business needs,” according to a recent report by Business Insider. The recent layoffs, which became effective on July 1, have ignited considerable controversy and discussion among employees within the company.
The decision comes even though Microsoft had previously committed to enhancing diversity initiatives, such as a pledge made in 2020 to double the representation of Black and African-American leaders within the company by 2025. However, the current status of progress on this initiative is not clear right now.

Diversity Takes a Backseat as a Microsoft DEI Team Is Laid Off
In the latest updates to the job cuts occurring this year, one of Microsoft’s DEI teams has just been let go. DEI job cuts have grown in number since 2023, and Microsoft is not the first company to make the move, however, the increasing number of cuts is causing employees to become concerned. The decision came to light after the team lead sent out an email to other staff members at the organization, sharing their thoughts on the move.
Microsoft’s DEI cuts don’t stand in isolation as the company has been making significant changes to its workforce this year. The company’s shift in AI prioritization and its decision to close unproductive units of its business has led to several job cuts at the organization and the DEI team is likely another part of the same strategy.

The same DEI Lead also accused Microsoft leadership of "discrimination, harassment, and toxicity" directed towards the DEI team, itself. The details of that alleged discrimination remain unclear.
There are many questions surrounding these layoffs. How many employees are involved? And, perhaps even more importantly, what does this mean for Microsoft's overall DEI policies?
Speaking to one Microsoft whistleblower, The Lunduke Journal was told, "[This layoff is] just one head on the hydra. Every team has DEI promoters." The whistleblower goes on to say, "[DEI] is everywhere."
Multiple Microsoft sources made it clear that the majority of DEI-focused Microsoft employees remained in their roles -- and that these layoffs, whatever their total number (which remains unknown), represents a small portion of the total DEI initiative within the company.
