We're Still Fast

Speed does matter. In Geminispace, speed is great because even underpowered devices can cope and there's almost no overhead associated with contacting multiple domains at the same time.
The performance of techrights.org has been good since we moved everything to our home (it's based in London, but we're not subjected to London rents; Manchester is a lot more affordable). The site is even faster than the BBC's despite being on shoestring budget with only a small technical team.
Nowadays I am honestly disgusted to see how long it takes to open even a single "tweet" (in X.com) or a single quip in the Fediverse. It's so slow that after opening a page I turn away to another virtual desktop and "come back" seconds later when the JavaScript 'webapp' is fully loaded. This sort of lag is obnoxious or agonising, more so as it can take longer to load some quip (short burst of text) than to actually read the darn thing. █
