Do-No-Evil Saturday - Part I: SUSE, Xandros, and Turbolinux Catch-up

SUSE SLED GNOME

OpenSUSE:KDE

It has been an important week for KDE, whose developers got together. At the same time, Novell seems to be hiring programmers for KDE.

OpenSUSE remains one of the bleeding-edge distributions as far as KDE4 is concerned and here's a look at the latest stable version on OpenSuSE 11.0.

I’ve added the Factory repository to the list of repositories I use to update my OpenSuSE install and now I am running KDE 4.1.

OpenSUSE: Events

Here is an OpenSUSE post about Akademy 2008 where Novell was a prominent advertiser.

In Sint-Katelijne-Waver, Belgium currently Akademy, the annual conference of the KDE project takes place. More than 300 people had a nice weekend listening to a whole bunch of very interesting talks of various topics around KDE.

Later in the week, ENOS 2008 was announced. it appears to be new.

The acronym ENOS stands for ‘Encontro Nacional de openSUSE‘, a Portuguese expression which can be translated to ‘National openSUSE Meeting‘, an event meant to unite the Portuguese openSUSE users, as well as provide the participants an inside view into the latest developments in the openSUSE project and stimulate them to take an active part in the community itself.

Joe Brockmeier (Zonket) had this chat at OSCON 2008.

OpenSUSE: Other

Novell tends to have its own specialised kernels, but a vanilla one is also an option.

Part 1 on how to compile and boot into the new kernel is here.

(This part will deal with what to do if you get an error I got on my test machine while trying to suspend to disk with the new kernel, it will also teach you how to remove the stock openSUSE kernel and how to delete compiled kernels using this guide in case you don’t like this kernel or if you compile a newer version in the future and want to remove this and what u can do about the apparmor module failing to load on the vanilla kernel)

YouTube saw this video of OpenSUSE 11.0 arriving just a few days ago.

SUSE (SLES/SLED)

Rodney Gedda got himself in a bit of a tizzy after had claimed that Novell's SUSE is the same as Linux, as in the kernel. Linux Today readers gave him a hard time, so he appears to have responded in this new essay. He then offers SLED some praises.

I have no doubt an “enterprise” supported distribution of Linux like SLED 10 can be just as, if not more, productive than the popular XP and Vista releases of Windows.

After quite some idle time, Novell's PR blog talks about a SUSE feature that's shared among some competitors. It's InfiniBand.

Novell’s inclusion of InfiniBand, backed by support from Voltaire, further demonstrates our commitment to enabling new technologies in the data center, while also ensuring customers receive the support they need to maximize the value of those technologies.

The Indian press shares some risky advice on how to get a GNU/Linux distro infected with Novell's Mono and Moonlight.

BANGALORE, INDIA: Moonlight is an open source implementation of MS Silverlight by Novell, for Linux users. As it's Mono- based, you must have Mono packages installed on your system, which the latest distros such as Ubuntu and Fedora come packed with.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, we neglected to mention IBM's new appliance, which runs SUSE. Here is the press release.

According to the company, the new developments include a preconfigured version of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 from Novell in Lotus Foundations and a toolkit that opens new opportunities for Domino software vendors (ISVs) to deliver their applications on a software appliance to the smallest businesses. IBM is also announcing a new strategy -- the ISV Software Appliance Initiative -- designed to enable a wide range of ISVs to deliver Linux software appliances to mid-market customers.

Here is a pseudo-article from TMCNet, which appears to have hired people in the east to take a press release, change a few words here and there, and then publish it as though it was an original article.

The new Software appliance include a preconfigured version of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 from Novell (News - Alert) in Lotus Foundations and a toolkit that opens new opportunities for Domino software vendors (ISVs) to deliver their applications on a software appliance to the smallest businesses.

Xandros

It's Viyya which is doing the talking once again [1, 2, 3, 4].

Viyya Technologies announced a strategic partnership with Xandros. The agreement gives Xandros exclusive rights to bundle Viyya technology with Xandros' custom OEM solutions to meet the needs of the growing number of users of Linux-based internet connected desktop and mobile devices.

Turbolinux

There's this article in an Asian language (the server is based in China). It covers Turbolinux and some of the patent attack against GNU/Linux, at least based on the isolated English terms that are peppered around the article. There's also this about Turbolinux Client 2008 and Wizpy, which is no longer heard from all that much. There are some others that suddenly crop up and also this article which appears to cover the main issues. Gross translation here.

And later on, as the world knows, they sold out to Microsoft.
