schestowitz http://boycottnovell.com/2009/01/15/ms-edgi… I’d be surprised you found no typos, but it’s gratifying if that’s the case. I’ll go ahead and edit it after one last pass… Thank you so much for reading…  let me know what you think. Jan 15 16:14
moogstrap whew. it’s pretty comprehensive Jan 15 16:30
schestowitz Hopefully the Indian press will use it again. Jan 15 16:30
schestowitz anivar helped me with the references and all.. Jan 15 16:30
moogstrap aye Jan 15 16:33
schestowitz Just keep an eye on: http://ec.europa.eu/justice_home/f… Jan 15 16:33
schestowitz by mail: “More to come, I guess. It is about lobbying the Article 29 Group, the core advisor community for data protection regulation in Europe.” Jan 15 16:33
schestowitz They already expand Sarko-type laws to Belgium. Jan 15 16:34
schestowitz “As of Belgian Universities I never saw such a tendency of academic institutions to sell out. 3/4 year ago I was at a law school event at Vrije University (because I resided in Brussels) with Nokia, it was about software copyright, not patents as I expected,. and basically these lobbyists used a students class as a training platform…” Jan 15 16:35
schestowitz “for their BS lobbying and maybe for brainwash of future generations, no idea maybe the University is a title mill. Basically there is an intellectual level you need to meet, I am not against partisan science or industry involvement, but that was way below. I had a person from the Council with me and we were both shocked.” Jan 15 16:35
schestowitz “You know the interesting aspect that they basically prostitute their institution to each and every player, the next week was a kind of security policy event with nato announced. This vulnerability might be related to the split in the Belgian nation in different language groups with their own administration and universities.” Jan 15 16:35
schestowitz US -> France (via Sarko) -> rest of EU Jan 15 16:35
schestowitz McCreevy too Jan 15 16:35
karabas whats about that ”data protection regulation in Europe”? Jan 15 16:35
moogstrap yes I haven’t heard about that Jan 15 16:35
schestowitz EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT : Computers, Privacy & Data Protection conference: Data Protection in A Profiled World ? < http://www.cpdpconferences.org > Jan 15 16:36

schestowitz “16 January 2009 – 17 January 2009 Brussels, Belgium -  This event aims to offer a disscussion forum for policymakers, academics, practitioners, activists and representatives from standardization bodies and ICT industries,on key issues related to data protection and privacy. The main topic of this year’s conference is “profiling and automatic computing”.” Jan 15 16:36
moogstrap here’s the UK doc http://ec.europa.eu/justice_home/fsj/pri… Jan 15 16:36
schestowitz Europe lets the American companies (i.e. investors) decide and instruct the young Jan 15 16:37
schestowitz This is wrong Jan 15 16:37
schestowitz Education and regulation comes FROM ABOVE corps, but they let _even overseas_ companies write law and practice. Jan 15 16:37
moogstrap The indoctrination thing is interesting. I mean, most people I know grew up with the belief that sharing is good. now it’s something perverse. Even things that are supposed to be shared anyway (GNU/Linux etc) are a threat. I wonder how successful it’s going to be Jan 15 16:40

schestowitz *change Jan 15 16:47
schestowitz That’s what word/terms like “intellectual PROPERTY” and “STEALING” are about. Microsoft employees are taught to use them when referring to ideas and they recite even terms like “piracy”. “If thought can corrupt language, then language can also corrupt thought.” –George Orwell Jan 15 16:51

amd-linux and they treat the company like their personal private army, unable to admit that they are wrong Jan 15 20:24
MinceR also, probably the closer they are to the top of m$, the more deluded they are Jan 15 20:24
amd-linux well would be easy…. adopt Linux as the core of the OS, build the Windows GUI around it and there you go Jan 15 20:24
amd-linux not that I want to see this happen…. Jan 15 20:25
amd-linux but they would have a secure, top notch OS core and their users the “familiar” GUI without the BSOD :-) Jan 15 20:25
amd-linux but Ballmer will rather bite his own d*** before he admits that FOSS and people like Stallman are actually right Jan 15 20:26
amd-linux he is a fanatic – unfortunately on the wrong side Jan 15 20:26

MinceR why? Jan 15 21:03
tessier_ Yeah, why? Jan 15 21:04
schestowitz Astroturfing is against the law in Europe now. One could probably sue many American companies here. Jan 15 21:04

tessier_ I prefer news.ycombinator.com these days anyway Jan 15 21:08
schestowitz They are all a bunch of zealots (yes, hypocrites too) up at the top… just watch them correspond. Jan 15 21:08
schestowitz Grey even called Linux a “cult” in correspondence b/w them. Does Remond have no mirrors? Jan 15 21:09
schestowitz MinceR: re qt, I promised to keep it private Jan 15 21:09
schestowitz Here’s a gem I got: “Steven Vaughan Nichols recently published a blog on SCO with “Garbage” in the title.  The comments attracted some SCO or Microsoft troll, who made five or more postings, all repeating a line about the “PR” campaign of Groklaw, and how Pamela Jones and her son had commercial interests in promoting FOSS, and how that plus IBM backing was why they had run this anti-SCO web site. “ Jan 15 21:10

tessier_ Tens of thousands of people have read and commented on this story, making it one of the most-read stories in the history of WKOWTV.COM.  27 News reporter Dan Cassuto will file an update on 27 News at 5:00 on Thursday.  We’ll review viewer comments, explain why this story is making some viewers so angry, and explore how quickly it’s spreading around the internet. tessier_ That was on /. this morning Jan 15 21:19
tessier_ Poor WKOWTV never saw it coming. Jan 15 21:19

tessier_ This is great for Linux. Mainstream exposure on the nightly news. Jan 15 21:19
tessier_ Not sure why Dell tried to convince her to go with it though. That was a bad move on Dell’s part. Jan 15 21:20
tessier_ They should have just returned it. Jan 15 21:20
tessier_ But dropping out of school because of a laptop issue? That’s just retarded. Jan 15 21:21
MinceR that woman is obviously an extreme idiot. Jan 15 21:21
MinceR as such, it would be a waste to have her go to college anyway. Jan 15 21:22
kevin_ tell me about it. i dropped out because they were wasting my time. e.g. an internship where i wasted 70 hours Jan 15 21:23
kevin_ anyway… i think it’s unfair how they’re painting ubuntu Jan 15 21:23
tessier_ Wow, tons of people came out to support Ubuntu in the comments. Jan 15 21:24
kevin_ i’m sure if she really wanted windows, she could have asked dell for a replacement within the 30 or whatever day period Jan 15 21:25
MinceR they should charge extra for winblows anyway Jan 15 21:25
kevin_ i experienced that whole ISP thing first hand though. I had to boot into windows to configure it which is a load of crap Jan 15 21:26
MinceR according to the /. people that cd is actually unnecessary Jan 15 21:27
kevin_ yeah apparenrly you can log into the router and bypass the friendly UI to configure it by hand Jan 15 21:27
MinceR as for “word”, she probably wouldn’t use many of the functionality anyway so AbiWord should be fine. Jan 15 21:28
MinceR or OOo Jan 15 21:29
kevin_ it’s that whole brand recognition thing though. They don’t ask you if you know spreadsheets, they ask if you know excel. Average people then think the only way to do work is with excel Jan 15 21:30
MinceR the worst part is that after playing around with windows and word, they believe they know everything Jan 15 21:31
MinceR and they don’t ask, only complain Jan 15 21:31
kevin_ they know everything… until a new version comes out with a new UI :) Jan 15 21:32

schestowitz They think that GUI/window interfaces are copying of Windows Jan 15 21:34
schestowitz Prevalence makes prior art? Jan 15 21:34
schestowitz Marketing does Jan 15 21:34
schestowitz And they use their army of spinners to pass on these lies Jan 15 21:35
tessier_ The comment system on that website is horrible. Jan 15 21:35
kevin_ i saw a mac with a 9 inch b&w screen using a gui from like 1983 Jan 15 21:35
schestowitz So this means that they can pass on such lies by ‘infecting’ non-spinners Jan 15 21:35
MinceR then more privately they acknowledge that both m$ and apple brutally ripped off xerox Jan 15 21:35
MinceR have you seen Pirates of the Silicon Valley? Jan 15 21:35

What Else is New

  1. The Story of Techrights, in Banners...

A look back at site banners from 2006-2021; they help illuminate or show our changing focus over the years

  2. With KDE Plasma 5.22 Having Just Been Released It's Time to Give KDE a Try (or Move to GNU/Linux, Leveraging the Best Features of Any Operating System Out There)

A quick recommendation of KDE based on a reasonably recent (but not latest) build; there's this myth about KDE being difficult and flaky, but for a number of decades it has been the most advanced desktop (on any operating system) and its developers managed to hide the complexity while offering users all the power they may want/need

  3. Open Letter to the FSF About Taking Control of the FSF's (and GNU's) IRC Channels

The FSF should have seized the opportunity, in light of self-harming IRC infighting (instability and unpredictability), to create its own IRC network and then help this new (or "GNU") network flourish

  4. EU Already Captured by -- and Lying for -- Corrupt EPO Officials, Team UPC, and Lobbyists of Multinational Corporations

12 pages of lies; is the European Parliament reduced to a mere marionette of corrupt officials who run the EPO into the ground?

  5. [Meme] Virtual Code of Conduct (ViCoC)

Cheapening of basic concepts and principles like "right to be heard" or "access to justice" is an international trend; we need to push back in the direction of justice, not fake 'innovation' or 'tech' (where it clearly does not belong)

  7. Virtual Injustice -- Part 4: Mihály Ficsor, the EPO's Hungarian “Fixer”

One key operative of António Campinos, who is fiercely in favour of software patents, has quite a colourful past and background

  8. Conversation With Richard Stallman in Brazil, May 31st 2021

At the end of last month Richard Stallman had a 2-hour (and beyond, considering some of the afterthoughts) conversation, which is now available online

  12. Petition Against Richard Stallman Continues Losing Signatures, Open Letter of Support Reaches 6,750 Signatures

The latest (if not last) person to garden the anti-RMS petition is an IBM employee. As has been the case for months. Another removal. IBM has a grudge against GNU's founder and by extension the FSF (they want the FSF to be a slave of IBM, just like the Linux Foundation is; we last covered this a day ago). “An open letter in support of Richard Matthew Stallman being reinstated by the Free Software Foundation” has meanwhile reached 6,750 signatures and that number grows by about 50 every 3-4 weeks, so it’s reasonable to expect 7,000 by year’s end. The anti-RMS petition may fall below 3,000.

  13. IRC Proceedings: Thursday, June 10, 2021

IRC logs for Thursday, June 10, 2021

  14. Virtual Injustice -- Part 3: All the President's Men…

Benoît Battistelli‘s army of minions, combined with former colleagues of António Campinos, team up to participate in the legal fudge of the EPO

  15. EPO ‘ViCo’ Prior Art (or ViCo Going Back to the 1980s)

A previous post (video from yesterday) gave examples of prior art from the early/ier 1990s, debunking the EPO’s foolish and irrational embrace of this notion that so-called ‘ViCo’ is so absolutely incredible (we’ve kept talking, e.g. in many prior videos, about how the only real ‘innovation’ was connection speeds); MinceR recalls that “when UMTS (“3G”) was new, video calls on mobile was the feature that was supposed to sell the technology” and in the mid-80s you could already see who you spoke to (almost) in real time

  16. The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) Needs to Get Its Act Together on the EPO's GDPR Violations

EU authorities aren't keeping abreast of EPO abuses; as a result, people's basic rights and fundamental sense of dignity erode, with impunity resulting in passage of massive piles of data to foreign corporations and governments that engage in industrial and political espionage

  17. Links 10/6/2021: Raspberry Digital Signage 15.0, NVIDIA Driver 470

    Links for the day

  18. EPO 'ViCo' Prior Art (~30 Years Ago): Barely Innovative at All

Debunking the EPO‘s Big Lie that ViCo is some sort of incredible and innovative thing that must therefore be embraced fully; the missing ingredient was fast network connections, so there’s no excuse for EPO claiming that we must embrace such stuff irrespective of the law, constitutions etc.

  19. Improvements in the Techrights Gemini Capsule

Further improvements are being made to our Gemini capsule, which contains all the latest stories sans the graphics; it now has a total of 35,820 pages

  20. Linux Foundation is a Foundation of Mass Surveillance

Whatever the so-called ‘Linux’ Foundation touches turns to dust; they’re already killed the site known as Linux.com and now they scatter the “Linux” brand to the wind (in pursuit of misbranding cash)

  21. [Meme] Lord Justice Sir

Inspired by an old Internet joke, we present the state of EPO 'justice'

  22. The EPO's Lack of Objective Legal System is No Laughing Matter

The array of abuses committed by António Campinos and his EPO minions (people who meddle in legal affairs) is mentioned in this new video; we focus on what was shown this morning, i.e. in Part 2 of an ongoing series (to last two more weeks)

  23. Virtual Injustice -- Part 2: The ViCo Oral Proceedings of 28 May 2021

More than half a day of theatrics and stonewalling by the EBA may have done a damage so enormous to the EBA's credibility that irrespective of the final outcome the case is already seen as compromised

  24. IRC Proceedings: Wednesday, June 09, 2021

IRC logs for Wednesday, June 09, 2021

  25. Links 10/6/2021: KDE Gear 21.08 Schedule, Librem 5 USA Supply Chain Security

  26. Linux: Bugs Welcome

With UEFI ‘secure boot’ (aka ‘wontboot’ [1, 2]) and bad BIOS, are we just accepting malicious ‘features’ and inherently bad design?

  27. Links 9/6/2021: Krita 4.4.5 and Mabox Linux 21.06 Geralt

    Links for the day

  28. Purpose of Patents

Don't lose sight of what patents are truly about

  29. Why We Fight for Real Justice at the European Patent Office

European citizens need to join us and demand that the judges who assess patentability (w.r.t. public interest, the EPC, and common sense) do the right thing, not just based on career objectives (which at the EPO means loyalty to patent maximalists with little or no scientific background)

  30. Virtual Injustice -- Part 1: António's Increasingly Wonky Legal Fudge Factory

The EPO‘s attack on the independence of judges and on patent tribunals’ autonomy hasn’t stopped after Benoît Battistelli left; we take a closer look at the G 1/21 hearing, which took place at the end of May
