Gemini version available ♊︎2010 is the Year of Linux on the Desk
Summary: Dan Gillmor dumps Apple for GNU/Linux and form factors in general are changing over time (so discussions about “desktop” matter less)
With tablets, phones, and many devices which run Linux and sit on people’s desk (or in people’s pocket), is it finally the year that Linux dominates the desk?
On the desktop too, a famous journalist dumps Apple for GNU/Linux right now.
So why am I about to migrate to Linux (aka GNU/Linux)? Because Apple is pushing me away, and because I value some principles, perhaps almost religiously, that affect other decisions.
GNOME 3.0 is coming soon. The Linux kernel is fastest-growing on phones. Most tablets run GNU/Linux. █

2010 may have been the year of Linux, given the success of Linux in embedded systems and cell phones. I read a prediction that the cross over point was sometime this summer, so there may already be more people using Linux than are using Windows and that is a great thing. If this is so, I’m glad that I said that 2010 could finally be that legendary Year of Linux. It surely was not the year of Vista or Windows 7, Zune, Windows Mobile, Mobile 7 or whatever Microsoft wants to call their second rate software today.
Freedom often follows Linux use. That places like Salon.com are calling what they use, “GNU/Linux” is another good sign. Phone companies are will keep their customers from software freedom if they can and many appliances are also Tivoized. What matters is that people are starting to understand software freedom and why it matters.
