step one
I quite like running, and cycling (of which there is /s/bicycles) and other forms of activity away from a computer. The irony of wanting to talk about things away from a computer on a computer is not lost on me. Nevertheless, I wrote down some thoughts on running and thought others might have their own so created this sub.

running
I had run before; towards things, away from things, in school. But it wasn't till my mid twenties that I became a runner, when I actually decided to devote my own time to running for longer than five minutes. In no small part, two coincidences turned what may have been a passing fancy into a life long practice.
A relationship came to an end around the same time that a colleague convinced me to sign up to a marathon with him. This gave me plenty of free time and something to do with it, not to mention the somewhat bizarre luxury of eating half a kilo of pasta on the couch in my running kit after a long run. Along the way, I have made mistakes, learned from some of them and am here to tell the tale many years into my running journey.

OCC25 More preparations
I fell into the Wayland rabbithole these last few days.
Progress has been made, but there are many, many rough edges. This isn't ready, yet. A lot of stuff works, but there are so many little things that don't. This isn't just about "compositors" but also about toolkits and tools. It feels a lot like Linux from 20-25 years ago, which is horrendously frustrating, because it feels like we wasted one or two decades of progress and stability.

OCC25 More preparations
Recently I wrote about installing a Telnet server [1], and a FTP server [2] in a FreeBSD jail. Old operating systems can't use ssh and scp, this way they can still communicate with systems in my network, and fetch and push files.

Re: XScreensaver is still a thing
When I moved to XFree86 (later known as Xorg) we of course used Jamie’s screensaver collection. I liked a lot of them, like the ones where it moves around pieces of your screen and what not, and when the Matrix movie came out the Matrix style “digital rain” was fun to look at. At this point I was no longer using screensavers, in favor of dpms, but it was sometimes fun to just start one to look at for a while.

Resurrection
Yes, it's been a long time. I broke my gemini server while upgrading the entire box and had to fix a lot of stuff, in particular the SSL certificate parsing.

Choosing a tool
One thing I'm thinking about lately is the tools I choose, specifically in the context of Programming Languages. Learning new programming languages is something that drew me towards hobbyist coding; the trouble is, it also throws up roadblocks towards me actually finishing projects. The trouble I have is that I'm not actually a *good* programmer, yet. So, in addition to having to deal with my relative lack of skill, trying to constantly use new languages means having to fight to learn how to do the little I do already know in the new language.
