"The Unix Kernel"
"Linux is a clone of the Unix kernel," says this announcement of GNU Linux-Libre 6.15 kernel, posted by Freedo (pseudonym; mascot) on Monday in linux-libre
.
A day earlier we published: Pushers of systemd Rewrite History (Richard Stallman Said UNIX "Was Portable and Seemed Fairly Clean")
The gist of it was, Richard Stallman said: "I never used Unix (not even for a minute) until after I decided to develop a free replacement for it (the GNU system). I chose that design to follow because it was portable and seemed fairly clean. I was never a fan of Unix; I had some criticisms of it too. But it was ok overall as a model."
"Unix" - or "POSIX" as he might call it - was not just a kernel and GNU didn't develop a kernel (Hurd) until much later. It would be misleading to call Unix or UNIX a kernel, even if Apple borrowed [sic] one.
Linux was inspired by MINIX and did so poorly, according to the creator or MINIX. Later Linux got plugged into GNU, which had a Unix-like design. █
