Internet Relay Chat (IRC) Turns 37.5
This month IRC turns 37.5. It all began in the University of Oulu in August 1988 and about half a decade later I tried IRC for the first time. It impressed me.
Our own IRC network (hosted by ourselves) began in 2021, but our IRC community began almost 18 years ago.
As noted the other week, IRC usage seems to be increasing this year. Last week netsplit.de saw almost 300,000 simultaneous users online across known networks (some are bots or the same people in several networks).
Can IRC reach age 75? Can the world last that long without human civilisation melting itself? █
