Summary: Novell on the slippery slope of Microsoft versus Linux

THE numbers speak for themselves. It's down to just 5.9% now (from 8.9%). On the other hand, rather than develop Linux for the Free software community Novell is now developing Mono to help Microsoft [1, 2, 3]. How things change over time. As we noted some months ago, Novell fires Linux developers whilst recruiting .NET/Mono talent. Even Novell's management has taken some Microsoft executives on board. ⬆

Novell should be considered a Microsoft subsidiary, Linux doesn't need any "contributions" from them.

Novell has been a subsidiary of M$ for a long time now and used to rope in any strays that were thinking of leaving M$ for Linux. I'd bet that at every site that once had a single, zero-maintenance Netware appliance, it has been replaced by three or four infected Windows machines and the corresponding monkeys to placate the management for the downtime.

Off topic I know, but I just wanted to say after reading some of the comments from recent threads this site is becoming like the Somme. Although more and more MS "attention" is being paid to this site I laud the principle of free speech here.

The drop wouldn't have anything to do with a reduced staff? Did they reduce Linux staff by X and increase Mono staff by X? Did Mono productivity increase by the same margin as Linux decreased?
