During my two dozen years of writing about open source and reviewing hundreds of Linux distributions, I have developed a keen interest in Linux offerings that break out of the traditional Linux operating system molds. More often than not, the most interesting and innovative Linux versions are in a growing category of independent distros.
Two examples are relatively new Linux distributions that come with much potential. Both Carbon and Blend Linux are unique in what their developers represent.
Over the years, I have used and extensively reviewed many Linux distros developed by large companies, vast volunteer communities, and single developers. Often, the most interesting come from independent or unaffiliated Linux builders.
These include distros such as PCLinuxOS, Tiny Core Linux, Slackware Linux, 4MLinux, KaOS, Linux From Scratch, Solus, MakuluLinux, and NixOS. One of my all-time favorites is Puppy Linux and a group of close cousin distros that embellish its look and feel.

GNOME is among the most respected and widely used desktop environments within the Linux fraternity. Every new release is like a breath of fresh air, bringing plenty of updates to look forward to.
GNOME 44 was released in March 2023, and it makes your desktop more appealing with its slew of new features. If you are ready to upgrade your GNOME version to 44, here are a few top features of GNOME 44 you should know about.
Hi, everyone!
I’m Pedro Sader Azevedo, a Computer Engineering student at Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp) in Brazil. In the next few months I’ll be working as a Google Summer of Code (GSoC) intern to integrate the functionality of GNOME Network Displays into GNOME Settings, with the guidance of Felipe Borges, Claudio Wunder, Jonas Ãâ¦dahl, and Anupam Kumar.
More about me
During the pandemic, when every aspect of life was moved to the digital realm, I learned about Free Software and was won over by its principled stance on technology. I decided to take back my computing and became a user (and vocal advocate) of GNU/Linux!
I absolutely love extensions, in general. I remember being blown away every time I found a notably extensible software, from Firefox add-ons in my early days of surfing the web to Neovim plugins in my latest coding endeavors.
This is why, once I started using GNU/Linux, I was amazed by GNOME Shell extensions. Being able to customize the appearance and behavior of my desktop environment as easily as used to with VS Code extensions was unimaginable coming from Windows and I loved every bit of it.
Since then, I’ve been a GNOME Shell extension fanatic and only upgraded my workstation when all extensions were made compatible with the latest version of GNOME. The addition of an upgrade assistant to Extension Manager made the wait easier, though not shorter.
Alpine Linux is known for its minimalistic approach, making it ideal for deployment in containerized environments, virtual machines, and embedded systems.
At the same time, while it is not a typical desktop-centric Linux distribution, thanks to its lightweight system’s design, it offers excellent choices for users seeking a sleek and fast desktop experience.
Undertaking the cloud migration of SAP S/4HANA can be difficult and face various challenges: both planned and unplanned downtime can stall business continuity and result in significant loss, and very often, a major outage is the result of accumulated minor issues that could have been identified and remediated in early stage.
With SUSE Linux Enterprise you’re not just using one of the most secure platforms available, you’re joining a community of innovators who are transforming the world. The next release of SUSE Linux Enterprise (SLE), currently available in beta, is optimized to host workloads across the widest range of environments.€
Every March, we commemorate the achievements and progress in the struggle for gender equality. And on March 8th, the world joined hands to celebrateââ¬Â¯International Women’s Day.ââ¬Â¯This year, we honor the past, present, and future of women and their vital roles within society.
In just a few weeks, SUSE Manager 4.3.6 will be available for you to download!€ While this is not a major release, plenty of new features come with it. There are many reasons to upgrade to this new release as soon as possible.€
Coming six months after Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.1, the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.2 is here to introduce support for 64k page sizes for Arm architecture to make it possible to deploy the operating system on more hardware and maximize the performance of large data set workloads, expanded capabilities of system roles to let you automate even more management tasks, as well as enhancements to Podman, Red Hat’s tool for developing, managing and running containers on Linux platforms.
The new Red Hat Enterprise Linux system role for Podman included with the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.2 release enables administrators to automate configurations for their specific needs and environments without requiring knowledge of the command line. In addition, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.2 updates several other system roles enabling automation of SQL Server/Active Directory authentication, support for SQL Server 2022, and Always-On availability group support.
The Flathub website now has an option to filter out non-free software. Building on (excellent) redesign earlier this year, the refreshed Flathub website continues to improve.
According to the Fedora Wiki, Fedora Onyx is being considered for acceptance. This spin makes use of the same foundation technology found in other immutable versions – such as Fedora Silverblue, Fedora Kinoite, and Fedora Sericea – and is built for those who are looking for the immutability and atomic features that rpm-ostree provides.
Fedora Onyx will use the Budgie desktop environment and, according to the Wiki, has a target release of Fedora Linux 39.
For those who don't know, an immutable operating system is one that ensures the core of the OS cannot be changed and are typically used for testing and container-based software development. Immutable operating systems focus on security and tend to be future-proof.
I have been using libvirt on CentOS + ZFS for my home lab for somewhere around a decade now.€ For the last several years, I have been trying off and on to switch to some kind of hyperconverged infrastructure, usually oVirt + a clustered storage solution (Ceph, Gluster).€ For various reasons, I've never quite managed to get all the pieces to work together correctly.
So, imagine how happy I was to hear about Harvester a while back.
This is the latest in our monthly series summarizing the past month on the Community Blog. Please leave a comment below to let us know what you think.
Trust is a word and a concept that is on my mind lately. Trust is an idea that permeates all levels of our waking consciousness, and impacts how we build connections and relationships with other human beings. It is something impossible to ignore, yet it is ironically hard to define and pin down. Beyond what is written in a dictionary, what is trust? What does trust look like? What does trust feel like? Anyone who works in “community work” knows that trust is often the fundamental tie between community leadership and community members. A leader wants to be trusted by the people whom they represent, and a person wants to trust their leaders to represent them fairly and accurately.

Open standards and collaboration are strategic to both hardware and software across industries and geographies. In the last decade, open source and open standards have reshaped our world. RISC-V is the most prolific and open Instruction Set Architecture in history, which has led the hardware community to embrace open standards and collaboration at this level.
This open Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) is enabling a new era of processor innovation through open-standard collaboration with rapid industry-wide adoption. To become the industry standard ISA across computing, the RISC-V ISA enables software and hardware design freedom on architecture. The architecture can be applied to a broad range of processors, from low-end microcontrollers to high-end server-grade processors.
Canonical worked with StarFive’s engineering team to create an optimised version of the latest Ubuntu release for use on the VisionFive 2.

The challenge Personal safety is a growing concern in a variety of settings: from high-risk jobs where HSE managers must guarantee workers’ security to the increasingly common work and study choices that drive family and friends far apart, sometimes leading to more isolated lives.
About 5 years ago Mozilla shipped Firefox Quantum, an upgrade that included significant performance improvements for most Firefox users. Unfortunately, Firefox Quantum didn’t improve performance for people who use screen readers and other assistive technology. In some ways, our screen reader performance actually regressed with the architecture changes that Quantum delivered.
The Firefox accessibility engineers remedied much of that performance regression in the late Twenty-Teens, but by 2020 they’d done all they could to keep up. Continued investment in the old architecture simply wasn’t going to be enough to maintain a competitive browser so we began planning a re-write, which became a project called Cache the World. This upgrade changes the way things work in Firefox’s accessibility code so that screen readers and other assistive technologies have fast access to the content they need.
Today, with the release of Firefox 113, those improvements are available to all Firefox users on Windows, Mac, Linux, and Android.

. This takes us down some interesting roads, in particular the distinction between giving and lending traits; it turns out that the closure traits specifically are a bit of a special case in turns of what we can do backwards compatibly, due to their special syntax. on!Goal

LinkedIn has announced layoffs in its sales, operations, and support department. The move by the Microsoft-owned company comes amid a weakening global economic outlook and a drop in demand. Some employees have already started receiving termination letter.
LinkedIn is everybody's favorite work-oriented social network, where we go to brag about our achievements in this weird, pacified, and ingenuine way we think employers might find to be professional and potentially desirable. Sadly, it seems some of LinkedIn's own employees may also be heading to the service to job hunt in the near term.
As part of Microsoft's cost-cutting measures for the year, its social network LinkedIn is shedding approximately 700 staff from its 20,000-strong team. In a note shared (opens in new tab) on LinkedIn itself, CEO Ryan Roslansky outlined the firm's "need" to cut costs and streamline, echoing phrasing used by many other tech companies in recent months, describing a challenging "macroeconomic environment." A big part of the restructuring effort is to wind down operations in China, owing to "fierce" competition from local rivals. LinkedIn will instead focus on helping firms hiring in China from outside of China, according to the note, while closing its local teams for marketing, operations, and development.
LinkedIn, the social media network owned by Microsoft Corp that focuses on business professionals, said on Monday it would cut 716 jobs as demand wavers, while also shutting down its China-focused job application.
LinkedIn CEO Ryan Roslansky described the layoffs as a hard decision to address a rapidly changing business landscape. As part of the job cuts, the company is ending its Global Business Organization. The existing Product and Engineering teams at LinkedIn will be the company's replacement for that organization.
Microsoft, LinkedIn’s owner, had already pulled the flagship networking site from China in 2021, leaving only a stripped-down app that catered to job seekers.
Ubisoft could see layoffs of up to 60 employees at two different offices, as part of an organizational shift. Both the North Carolina and Newcastle locations are impacted.

Adobe has patched more than a dozen vulnerabilities, including critical code execution flaws, in its Substance 3D Painter product.
Shares in Rapid7 Inc. fell slightly in late trading today despite the cybersecurity solutions provider reporting an earnings and revenue beat in its most recent quarter.
As some as you may know, MSI suffered a data breach which leaked a huge amount of source code, documentation and low-level firmware PRIVATE KEYS. This is super bad as it now allows anyone to sign a random firmware image and install it as an official MSI firmware. It’s even more super bad than that, as the certificates leaked seem to be the
KeyManifest
keys, which actually control the layer below SecureBoot, this little-documented and even less well understood thing called BootGuard. I’ll not overplay the impact here, but there is basically no firmware security on most modern MSI hardware now. We already detect the leaked test keys from Lenovo and notify the user via the HSI test failure and I think we should do the same thing for MSI devices too. I’ve not downloaded the leak for obvious reasons, and I don’t think the KM hashes would be easy to find either.
A public exploit targeting building automation systems brings KNX security back into the spotlight, with Schneider Electric releasing a security bulletin.

A U.K. citizen pleaded guilty today in New York to his role in cyberstalking and multiple schemes that involve computer hacking, including the July 2020 hack of Twitter.
Joseph James O’Connor, aka PlugwalkJoe, 23, was extradited from Spain on April 26.
“O’Connor’s criminal activities were flagrant and malicious, and his conduct impacted multiple people’s lives. He harassed, threatened, and extorted his victims, causing substantial emotional harm,” said Assistant Attorney General Kenneth A. Polite, Jr. of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “Like many criminal actors, O’Connor tried to stay anonymous by using a computer to hide behind stealth accounts and aliases from outside the United States. But this plea shows that our investigators and prosecutors will identify, locate, and bring to justice such criminals to ensure they face the consequences for their crimes.”
“O’Connor has left an impressive trail of destruction in the wake of his wave of criminality,” said U.S. Attorney Ismail J. Ramsey for the Northern District of California. “This case serves as a warning that the reach of the law is long, and criminals anywhere who use computers to commit crimes may end up facing the consequences of their actions in places they did not anticipate.”
The Justice Department today announced the completion of a court-authorized operation, code-named MEDUSA, to disrupt a global peer-to-peer network of computers compromised by sophisticated malware, called “Snake”, that the U.S. Government attributes to a unit within Center 16 of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation (FSB). For nearly 20 years, this unit, referred to in court documents as “Turla,” has used versions of the Snake malware to steal sensitive documents from hundreds of computer systems in at least 50 countries, which have belonged to North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) member governments, journalists, and other targets of interest to the Russian Federation. After stealing these documents, Turla exfiltrated them through a covert network of unwitting Snake-compromised computers in the United States and around the world.
