Our Most Productive Summer Since We Started (2006)
SO FAR this summer we've published at a pace of about 700 pages per month - about twice our prior peaks, which date back to 2009/10. For some context, back in 2009 I was able to devote almost my entire time to this site, so it was very active, it was thriving, and IRC as a community was doing OK. In 2010 I worked as a postdoc (until 2012) and then worked at Sirius (from 2011 till December 2022), so I wasn't able to work on this site as much as I wanted to and had always wished to.
The expectation is that this site will now thrive again, i.e. be as prolific as back in 2009. We've spent some time combating crime and trolls, but that seems to be a side issue now - something in the rear view for lack of a better metaphor.
The sites now serve about a million requests a day (all combined), IRC is mostly polite and amicable (British Police getting involved actually did help in this regard; I give them some credit for that), and we are very much emboldened by the release of Julian Assange 2.5 weeks ago. We continue to receive many leaks and whistleblower accounts (we don't typically post mere "dumps", it's just not our style), so we're only short on time, not on material. We are triaging and prioritising the material to be published over the next few years. Yes, years. It'll take a lot of time for analysis and processing. For comparison's sake, think of studying more than 2 decades' worth of secretive Debian mailing lists. There's a lot of stuff about Debian, GitHub, EPO and lots more. We have over 10,000 lines of written notes and drafts. We're in no hurry; it needs to be done properly, not impulsively. We also wish to maintain our 100% source protection record.
It's gonna be a hot summer. Get ready. █
