The Growth of GNU/Linux is Now a Mainstream Topic With Widespread Awareness
We can do less counting (of baskets and eggs) and more advocacy
Today we've decided to set aside some of our coverage that's based on statCounter data.
This decision has been long in the making. Nothing abrupt.
It's not that the issue does not matter. It does.
But... statCounter (and Steam Survey among other surveys) is now known to more people and it's more generally accepted that GNU/Linux is likely around 5% of the laptop/desktop market.
Hence, in order to use the limited time we have to cover other topics, we've decided to set aside statCounter for now. Yes, it's just a temporary thing, seeing that a lot of the "tech" media covers that a bit anyway (and covered it a lot last month).
"I guess [we can set it aside,] but it should be covered some more at some future date," an associate told me. "1) The OEM monopoly stands in the way of further growth. 2) Microsoft is doubling down on the purge of non-Microsoft systems, especially in academia [and] that is a very serious long-term problem."
We can instead focus on these issues, putting aside the statistics as measured based on Web usage. "Yes, the mainstream and some vloggers are now covering the market share," the associate said, "growth so now is a fine time to let that topic rest as far as TR is concerned."
Expect articles to get a bit longer, too. █
