In Western Society “Freedom” No Longer Means What It Used to

Sometimes it means violence, deregulation; the word "rights" was suggested as better or at least less ambiguous (where the meaning of "freedom" had been perturbed if not lost)

If all I say is I'm in favor of freedom, I have not really tackled the difficult issue, because it's very easy to say: I stand for freedom, even Bush says he stands for freedom, and Bush doesn't even recognize freedom after he's crushed it. ~Richard Stallman

Summary: The word "freedom" does not mean to everyone what people tend to assume; the word has been generalised and extended to even mean the very denial of freedom

"Before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth, we were here. Before the pen of Jefferson etched across the pages of history the majestic words of the Declaration of Independence, we were here. If the inexpressible cruelties of slavery could not stop us, the opposition we now face will surely fail."

--Martin Luther King Jr.
