SUSE Linux to be Powered by More Microsoft .NET?

Posted in DRM, GNU/Linux, Microsoft, Mono, Novell, OpenSUSE at 10:01 am by Dr. Roy Schestowitz

Steve Ballmer rides SUSEAssimilate or be shunned

Pascal Bleser, who has just been elected for the OpenSUSE Board (he won by a good majority in fact), clearly seems to be defending and almost welcoming Mono in his blog. It probably would be surprising had he expressed the opposite opinion because Novell is funding Mono-based projects, promoting Tomboy even for proprietary platforms and sponsoring Banshee, which replaces perfectly-fine applications that are free from Microsoft technology.

Ryan Paul still defends this too, as he typically does. Why the apathy? They simply help the Microsoft API (along with associated software patents) penetrate a Free platform. Bleser admits that Java is a decent option, so why does he join Novell’s Java opposers [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]?

It’s an open question.

Elsewhere in the news, it’s being suggested that Netflix will deliver to GNU/Linux… but only provided that the user accepts unacceptable risks like Silverlight.

Soon, with the aid of Silverlight’s integrated PlayReady DRM, Intel-based Mac users will be able to stream their chosen content.

Too bad there's no Silverlight for GNU/Linux, eh? Maybe the legally-unsafe Moonlight from Novell will bring DRM too. That would not surprise because Novell does not care about freedom and we have been speaking for quite some time about the possibility that Novell will bring DRM to its desktop.

“Our partnership with Microsoft continues to expand.”

Ron Hovsepian, Novell CEO

Another article that delivers none of the sensational revelations that the title claims it bears…

    Get a job, man…

Try to link or at least name the good applications. Right now sock puppets can pretend the don’t exist because they’re not mentioned in the article.

Others, who may have grown up on the believe that the sun rises and sets from Bill’s ass, may find the names of the good packages useful to know.

If you want to promote something, name it. You’ve provided a push. Now point to the destination.

Wow, this blogger is talkative – 3 lines of his comments inside my own for free! Hey, thanks, man.

How about adding another two or three lines to the defammations and using a Hexamter? You could also make tasteful use of different colors.

    Needs Sunlight,

It would be easier if there were static pages or a list of links to point to. Other than that, I agree that it would not be too much of a distraction/clutter.

Netflix supports sliverlie, so it’s only ms/apple platform. That means there’s a market for the other platforms (Linux,BSD,Unix, etc.); except that mpaa/riaa control that media content.

The only Mono applications that Novell fund are MonoDevelop and Banshee.

They do not fund Tomboy. Sandy Armstrong, while a Novell engineer, does not work on Tomboy as part of his day job. His job at Novell is a11y.

Tomboy is his personal project that he works on in his own free time.

    Don’t forget Mono and Moonlight.

    They do not fund Tomboy.

Yes, I know. I wrote promote, not fund.
