Summary: News about OpenSUSE, of which there is a scarcity this week

AS WAS mentioned before, Novell celebrates the funding from Google and CIOL, as usual, just modifies the press release a little bit and then reposts it.

There wasn't much out there this week, but here are some links of interest:

A new sort of version of OpenSUSE 11.1 is released with the latest KDE4.

While 11.2 is still months away there’s still plenty of activity going on with openSUSE. In addition to last week’s milestone release, you can also get your hands on openSUSE 11.1 Reloaded. This is a respin of openSUSE 11.1, including KDE 4.2.2 packages and updates to 11.1.

Zonker is known for his KDE affinity, but his latest take on Konqueror was not particularly encouraging.

It was hard to find new reviews of OpenSUSE 11.1, but here is a short one and a rave from Gabriel Stein.

- I really like easier stuff. I’m a SuSe user since 1999. And I have everything working fine since that.

Overall I'm very impressed with openSUSE 11.1. I'm still getting used to YaST, it has little quirks I'm not used to yet, and there are some places where configuration options overlap (there are several network config utilities). The system itself is rock-solid; however, and I'd definitely recommend it over Ubuntu for new users. For running the latest software it is right up there with Fedora, and surpasses it in some ways. For package management I've found zypper to be more to my liking than yum, and on par with apt-get. OpenSUSE 11.1 won't replace Debian stable on my desktop, but it is a great fit for my laptop.
