Gemini version available ♊︎Microsoft and O’Reilly Hook Up
Embrace, Extend…
Summary: Microsoft gets even closer to O’Reilly
THE relationship between OSCON and Microsoft is a rather complex subject that we covered before [1, 2, 3]. It should not be surprising to see O’Reilly kissing Microsoft’s behind, having ignored Microsoft’s abusive intentions all along in recent years. They finally enter an agreement on literature.
This pair will get even closer after this deal, not just the usual sponsorships. Glyn Moody claims that O’Reilly is “a shadow of the *nix publisher it once was…”
How did this come about? █
“When people understand what Microsoft is up to, they’re outraged.”

Well, looking at this page, I see one new book on Linux and one new book on Windows 7 too:

But they were always leeches anyway! The strength of Unix is that it comes with documentation, you don’t need any book to learn how to use it once you know the ‘man’ command. Unfortunately this is becomming less true with various Linux based systems – some of which don’t even install documentation unless told explicitl! Fortunately most GNU software still maintains a particular focus on (extremely) good documentation.
Well you can say one thing about them, they’ve certainly been the perfect ‘open source’ company. Or `How to make free money off other people’s work’ …
(i’ve never needed any of their books and don’t imagine I ever will)

At the same time, these books are a bit of a service to those requiring it. It doesn’t harm to have them and it helps pay authors.

Yep, look at the O’Reilly’s “New Releases” page I linked above. There is also several new Apple-related books, two on the Palm Pre, and one on PHP/MySQL, and another on Python too.

They diversify where there is money.
