      • LinuxiacKitty Terminal Emulator: How to Install, Configure, and Use It

In this guide, we will be looking at how to install, customize and use the Kitty terminal emulator on Linux.

Some tasks are still best accomplished via the command line, even with sophisticated modern desktop environments jam-packed with administrative tools, utilities, and productivity software, all with appealing graphical user interfaces.

A terminal emulator allows you to use the power of the command line on your desktop. In addition, the terminal window provides access to a console and its applications, such as command-line interfaces (CLI) and text user interface software.

      • Tools as Superpowers

I had these thoughts lately: what if I can't use Emacs anymore? Maybe I can't install Emacs due to some policy, or my future laptop is Windows and Emacs and other tools can't be installed easily. The restriction itself is not important. The point is what if I find myself without the software I'm used to? Am I now 50% myself? Am I a fraud, by letting others think my skill set level is somewhere up here, but without the tools it's much lower?

My way of thinking about this was that I have great capabilities because some of the tools I use. Again, we can mention Emacs and orgmode if we talk about organization, tasks and projects management, scheduling, knowledge management, all of which are important in any field. Losing these will impact my skills.

      • The Day of a new Command-Line Interface: Shell | Arcan

This article continues the long-lost series on how to migrate away from terminal protocols as the main building block for command-line and text-dominant user interfaces. The previous one (Dawn of a new Command-Line Interface(2017)) might be worth giving an extra read afterwards, but it is not a prerequisite to understanding this one.

The value proposition and motivation is still that such a critical part of computing should not be limited to device restrictions set in place some 50-70 years ago. The resulting machinery is inefficient, complex, unreliable, slow and incapable. For what is arguably a strong raison d’être for current day UNIX derivates, that is not a strategic foundation to neither rely nor expand upon.

So, I’ve made a partition on my disk, installed and tried for a couple of days. My first impression was the speed, BeOS was fast. Everything was even smoother than with linux on a regular PC of the Win9x/Me era. It was also visually pretty, at least for the GUIs available at that time. Unfortunately it was discontinued.

        • Beta NewsFacial recognition comes to deepin Linux -- can you trust China with your face?

deepin is one of the prettiest Linux distributions, and many people use it every day. Unfortunately, there is a big problem with the operating system -- it is developed in China. While the Chinese people are good, the government of that country is not -- it oppresses its citizens and censors a lot of information. And so, some people are wary of using any Chinese-made software. That is understandable.

Normally I am OK with using deepin Linux, despite its Chinese roots, as it is largely open source. However, with version 20.5, I am a bit hesitant. You see, the newest variant of the operating system adds optional facial recognition for gaining access to your computer. This is similar to Microsoft's Windows Hello -- something I use regularly. But Microsoft is a USA company. When it comes to deepin, can we trust China with our faces?

        • Is There an Alternative to iOS and Android Smartphones? - GameRevolution

There have been plenty of arguments comparing Android and iOS, but what if you want an alternative? There used to be quite the competition when it came to smartphone OSes, but Windows Mobile, Fire OS, and, Blackberry have all gone the way of the Dodo. Most people think that the big two that are left are the only choice, but you don’t have to be stuck with Apple and Google.

There are a few big caveats to using an iOS or Android alternative. You’re not going to have a wide selection of devices to choose from, and they’re frequently not flagship-level phones. You also won’t get the enormous app selection you get from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Support can be spotty as well, depending on what choice you make.

However, it is entirely possible to sever yourself from the Android and iOS ecosystems. We’ll list a few of the best alternatives below.

Two good examples of solutions that are being built to support open data and the sustainable reuse of public sector information are the Open Data Support initiative (https://www.opendatasupport.eu/) and the Fosseps programme (https://joinup.ec.europa.eu/collection/fosseps).

Open Data Support is a 36 month project (under DG CONNECT of the European Commission) to improve visibility of, and facilitate access to, datasets published on local and national open data portals, to increase their re-use within and across borders. It is based on the principle that a piece of data or content is ‘open’ if anyone is free to use, reuse, and redistribute it, with possible requirements to attribute its source.

FOSSEPS stands for Free and Open Source Solutions for European Public Services. It has its origins in the 2021 initiative “Europe-wide solutions for free and open source software use by public services in the EU”. It is designed to manage and protect open source software and solutions, and treat it as a collective, shared and valuable European asset.

    • TediumBruce Willis and The Razzies: The Case for Empathy in Trash Culture

: As is well-documented by the place where this lives, I thrive on bad culture, on moments of mediocrity. Bad culture deserves a home to live, too. And in a world where Whoopi Goldberg can create a movie with a damn dinosaur (just one example, of many, of works that were contractually obligated to be bad), someone needs to be pointing those things out. But this week, something happened that we need to talk about: Bruce Willis’ family announced he was retiring from acting after being diagnosed with aphasia. While admiration for Die Hard and Pulp Fiction springs eternal, Willis made a lot of slapdash films in the past few years, and the reason for that is now more clear. Unfortunately for the Razzie Awards, which went out of its way to “honor” Willis last week, the organization found itself having to publicly rescind its award to Willis as clearly being the product of a different kind of bad taste. I guess this makes me wonder—can mockery culture have empathy, too? Today in Tedium, inspired by this saga, I want to consider the ethics of badness.

      • Rolling StoneStaten Island Is About to Become Home to the First Amazon Labor Union in America

Amazon spent $4.3 million over the past year trying to snuff out pro-labor sentiment, according to HuffPost, citing U.S. Labor Department documents the company filed on Thursday. High on its radar was Chris Smalls, a former Amazon worker at JFK8 who organized a strike over lack of protective measures for workers in the early days of the coronavirus pandemic. The company fired Smalls, claiming he flouted social distancing guidelines. He, along with JFK8 employee Derrick Palmer, launched a unionization campaign that many commentators believed would have a slim chance of success. Besides Amazon’s ample war chest to fight such efforts, another reason, Smalls explained, was the high turnover rate at the company. But along the way, the union drive seemed to gain traction after Amazon executives discussed smearing Smalls as “not smart or articulate,” and after Smalls and two others were arrested while attempting to deliver food to Amazon workers.

      • ABCAmazon workers in NYC vote to unionize, a first for company

The 67 ballots that were challenged by either Amazon or the ALU were not enough to sway the outcome. About 57% of the more than 8,300 workers on the voter list cast their ballots.

Federal labor officials said the results of the count won’t be verified until they process any objections that both parties may file. Any objections are due by April 8.

      • The VergeAmazon workers vote to unionize Staten Island warehouse

Workers at an Amazon warehouse in New York City have voted to unionize, an historic first for workers at the e-commerce company. The final tally was 2,654 yes votes, and 2,131, with 67 challenges. The workers at the JFK8 fulfillment center in Staten Island will join the Amazon Labor Union, as the number of challenges is not sufficient to affect the outcome.

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) determined in January that unionization efforts at the facility had “reached a sufficient showing of interest” to hold an election. The facility employs roughly 5,000 people.

Amazon warehouse workers in New York City voted in favor of joining a trade union on Friday, marking the first-ever successful union campaign against the tech giant in its history.

The election was held by staff at Amazon's JFK8 fulfillment center on Staten Island, New York: 2,654 votes were cast by the facility's workers in favor of joining the Amazon Labor Union (ALU) versus 2,131 votes against the move. About 8,300 in total were eligible to vote, and the results need to be signed off by US labor officials.

      • India TimesMicrosoft's cloud business targeted by EU antitrust regulators

EU antitrust regulators are quizzing Microsoft's rivals and customers about its cloud business and licensing deals, a questionnaire seen by Reuters showed, in a move that could lead to a formal investigation and renewed scrutiny of the U.S. software company.

The European Commission has fined Microsoft a total 1.6 billion euros ($1.8 billion) in the previous decade for breaching EU antitrust rules and for not complying with its order to halt anti-competitive practices.

The company found itself on the EU competition enforcer's radar again after German software provider NextCloud, France's OVHcloud and two other companies filed complaints about Microsoft's cloud practices.
