A few weeks ago I got a new 2023 Hyundai Sonata which replaced my 2019 Hyundai Sonata, which had previously replaced my 2008 Hyundai Sonata. I quickly realized that features in modern cars have caught up in terms of things they deem as safety enhancements, but I'm trying to figure out how to disable most of them.

James G ☛ Advent of Technical Writing: Being a Technical Writer
Each member of your team has something they can offer to help you do your job. Engineers can help communicate the "hows" and "whys" behind technical decisions and ensure your documentation is comprehensive. Designers can help you with visual assets. Product managers, marketing, and sales can all assist with positioning.

Zach Flower ☛ Portable Ergonomics
Earlier this week, I wrote about digitizing and purging the extra shit I've accumulated over the years, but the reality is that some things just can't be easily minimized—not that I'd want them to be... minimalism sounds exhausting.
Sure, I can get rid of a lot of my media, and pack away what holds meaning for me, put furniture in storage and donate the extras, but one thing that I'm struggling a bit with is downsizing my work setup.

Medium ☛ More than calculators: Why large language models threaten learning, teaching, and education
I have been asked — by teachers, school leaders, state superintendents—for my opinion. Are large language models like calculators, where they’ll have either no effect, or some positive effects? Will they have even greater effects, heralding a transformation of education by freeing teachers from having to teach content? Are they an unqualified threat to modern education that will have devastating consequences to student learning? Or is it the standard “it depends”, where there will be some good and some bad, depending on how they are used?
Obviously, there is no way to predict any of these futures with certainty. But we can make predictions, and we can inform those predictions with the best knowledge we have about what LLMs are, how school works, and what learning is. So here is my informed prediction: LLMs will ultimately be a net harm to student learning and schools, accelerating the collapse of public education. Let’s step through why I predict this, one fact at a time, and see if you arrive at the same conclusions.

New York Times ☛ Who Are the Members of the Harvard Corporation?
The board, the smaller and more powerful of two governing boards at Harvard, dates back to 1650, making it the oldest corporation in the Western Hemisphere, according to the university. For generations, the corporation was made up of only the university president and six others, but it expanded in 2010 to 13 members amid calls for clearer communication with the broader Harvard community, according to the school’s Office of the Governing Boards.
Here’s what to know about the board’s current members.

Vintage Everyday ☛ Vasa: The Epic 17th-Century Swedish Warship That Sank Into Her Maiden Voyage and Remained Intact for Over 300 Years
The ship was built on the orders of the King of Sweden Gustavus Adolphus as part of the military expansion he initiated in a war with Poland-Lithuania (1621–1629). She was constructed at the navy yard in Stockholm under a contract with private entrepreneurs in 1626–1627 and armed primarily with bronze cannons cast in Stockholm specifically for the ship. Richly decorated as a symbol of the king’s ambitions for Sweden and himself, upon completion she was one of the most powerfully armed vessels in the world. However, Vasa was dangerously unstable, with too much weight in the upper structure of the hull. Despite this lack of stability, she was ordered to sea and foundered only a few minutes after encountering a wind stronger than a breeze.

Daniel Miessler ☛ LFTM: 'Looking Forward to Monday' is the Metric for 2024
Too many of us dread them. The meetings. The meetings about meetings. The planning that rarely turns into reality. Team politics. Perpetual reviews. And generally feeling like you’re wasting your valuable time and attention.
If that’s you, you probably see the weekend as a temporary sanctuary from a week of necessary frustration.
We’re told this is normal. We’re told everyone feels this way, and that we should accept it. It’s not true.

Futurism ☛ Google Search Losing Battle Against Barrage of SEO Spam

El País ☛ Russia expands into the Sahel with its new brand: Africa Corps
Russia is expanding its influence and military presence in the Sahel at an unprecedented pace. After consolidating itself in Mali — where Wagner Group mercenaries were decisive in the national army’s reconquest of Kidal against the Tuareg rebels last November — Moscow is now laying the foundations for its deployment in Burkina Faso and negotiating with Niger to become a key military ally. To this end, the Russian government has created a new military structure called Africa Corps, which works under the Defense Ministry. In this way, it intends to replace the Wagner Group and move away from a decentralized private company to one that is more directly controlled by the state. In parallel, at the beginning of December, the U.N. made official its complete withdrawal from Mali after handing over the Mopti base to the Malian authorities.

El País ☛ Dearborn: The Arab heart of the United States is abandoning Biden over the war on Gaza
He’s not the only one who feels this way in Dearborn. This industrial city — the seventh-largest in the state of Michigan, next to Detroit — is nicknamed the “Arab capital” of the United States. More than half of its residents — 54.5%, according to the last census — are of Middle Eastern or North African origin. They heavily voted for the Democratic Party in the 2020 presidential elections. Their support made it possible for Biden to win Michigan, a crucial swing state. However, since the beginning of the war on Gaza — and given the unconditional support of the President of the United States for Israel — many residents have declared themselves to be totally opposed to a second mandate for the current occupant of the White House. From Dearborn, a campaign has started to ensure that no Arab-American supports Biden’s re-election in November 2024.

New York Times ☛ Let’s Rescue Book Lovers From This Online Hellscape
In an ideal world — one in which it wasn’t owned by Amazon — Goodreads would have the functionality of a site like Letterboxd, the social network for movie fans. Letterboxd has called itself “Goodreads for movies” but it has far surpassed that initial tag line, having figured out how to create a smooth and intuitive user experience, provide a pleasant and inviting community and earn revenue from both optional paid memberships and advertisers, including studios that produce the films being discussed. Meanwhile, publishers still rely on Goodreads to find potential readers, but targeted advertising has grown both less affordable and less effective.

Two suspects said to be involved in the supply of illegal IPTV streams have been arrested following a raid at an ISP. An investigation concluded that illicit content, including Premier League and La Liga matches, was made available to thousands via an app bundled with internet subscriptions. In a statement, the ISP aimed to clear up "some confusion" but whether that will be enough is up for debate.

The crowd
The cold snap that's been raging for over a week seems to have abated a bit, and I wanted to get into the Christmas mood, so I went downtown.
However, since all the people who had been stuck at home had come out, I was soon swept up in the crowd and it was hard to walk on the streets. I was afraid that someone would fall and cause a big accident, so I hurried back home. Even though the cold had receded, the weather was still hard on me, and the lines at restaurants were so long that I couldn't eat and came home hungry.

It's Christmas Eve and I'm tired
It does not help that in the past 72 hours I have slept maybe 7 total. I have a weird sleep schedule due to most of my friends existing an ocean away, but I usually just shift my sleep hours instead of removing them. Well, right now I'm running on caffeine and fumes and I really, really need to sleep.

Merry Christmas, Midnight!
Oh dear, a quick drink before heading off to another town for the holidays.
I'm wishing all of you reading this a calm and satisfying holiday season – whatever you may celebrate or not. And to those who may read – or re-read, who knows – it after the holidays a happy new year!

A bad definition of identity
So yesterday I used the word "identity". I don't like this word. I don't have a clean intuition of what it means, and I see a lot of people being angry about it. I find that usually when people are angry about a word, they don't know what it is¹. So I don't want to use it.
I had a shower - yeah that's always where stuff goes wrong, never have showers kids - and I made a terrible definition of "self" that would allow a terrible definition of identity.
