Hackaday ☛ A Fully Automatic British Breakfast: Ready While You Sleep
What do you mean, the temporary breadboard setup went into production? (Credit: [Gregulations], YouTube)Among all the amazing technologies that were promised to us, there is one that is much more egregious than the lack of flying cars and real hovering hoverboards: the lack of fully automated breakfast-maker machines. Instead we find ourselves handling the same dumb appliances each morning as we make a healthy breakfast that we then have time to wolf down before rushing out of the door to still be a few minutes late for work. When [Greg] researched machines that could automatically prepare breakfast, he came up empty, which led him down the rabbit hole of the Autochef-9000.

Hackaday ☛ Thrift Store CD Rack Turns Into Small Parts Storage Playground
What in the world could an accessory for an obsolete audio medium possibly have to do with keeping all your unruly bits and pieces in order? First of all, we’re not sure the CD is quite dead yet; we’ve got about a thousand of them packed away somewhere, and we’re pretty sure they’ll be back in style again one of these days. Until then, though, the lowly CD rack might be just what you need to get your shop under control.

Today I screwed up
Earlier today I really "got out of the house" for the first time in a while and went to a Social Event with Real People. It was loud, and I was surrounded by people I don't really know, so I was pretty nervous. Though there was this one person who had caught my eye.
I don't know them very well, but I recognize them because, for whatever reason, I seem to have an encyclopedic knowledge for faces. I suppose they're someone whose work I respect, and who I'd be interested in getting to know. And for whatever reason, near the end of the event, they walked up and started talking to me.

[Old] The University of Chicago Press ☛ Brain Drain: The Mere Presence of One’s Own Smartphone Reduces Available Cognitive Capacity
We propose that the mere presence of one’s own smartphone may induce “brain drain” by occupying limited-capacity cognitive resources for purposes of attentional control. Because the same finite pool of attentional resources supports both attentional control and other cognitive processes, resources recruited to inhibit automatic attention to one’s phone are made unavailable for other tasks, and performance on these tasks will suffer. We differentiate between the orientation and allocation of attention and argue that the mere presence of smartphones may reduce the availability of attentional resources even when consumers are successful at controlling the conscious orientation of attention.

Kansas Reflector ☛ If schools won’t ban kids’ cellphones, some lawmakers say, they will
“Social media is often anti-social, and too much smartphone makes you stupid,” Lamont said in his State of the State address this year.
In Utah, Republican Gov. Spencer Cox in January sent a letter to school leaders throughout the state urging them to get cellphones out of class.
“Placing cellphones in backpacks or lockers during class time allows students to give their undivided attention to lessons, to fully participate in discussions and to build relationships with their peers,” Cox wrote in an opinion piece published in the Deseret News. “Our students deserve every advantage and removing cellphones from learning time is one proven way we can help our children succeed.”

YLE ☛ Researcher: Schools should demand more
Avoiding studying is nothing new, Lakka pointed out. Smartphones, however, make it so much easier than it used to be.
"We've all been distracted in class, but phones now are a source of long-term entertainment. How many of us would have decorated the margins of our notebooks or scratched our desks for very long?" Lakka asked.
Lakka said that schools shouldn't only consider how phones can be used for learning, but also how they affect the overall atmosphere of the classroom.
"I feel that we wouldn't lose much by giving up the phones," she said.

[Old] CardContact Systems GmbH ☛ Remote Key Attestation explained
Remote Key Attestation is the mechanism by which a relying party can cryptographically verify that a public key is part of a key pair that was generated inside a trusted device. The relying party can be a certification authority, that wants to enforce a certain policy for storing key material.
The SmartCard-HSM has supported key attestation from it’s very beginning. It does that by signing the public key using its Device Authentication Key as soon as the key pair is generated.
Every SmartCard-HSM carries a Device Authentication Certificate, that is issued by the Device Issuer CA to bind the unique identity of the device to an unique Device Authentication key pair generated during production.

Tedium ☛ Digital Training Wheels
Looking back at a bunch of toy electronics that may have latently inspired the tech that we use today. Might as well hook ’em young.
For a moment, consider the evolutionary space between the original Game Boy and the iPad. Both defined the way kids would experience computers in a portable format, but were so defining that they kind of set the template for everyone else. But it was clear that the Game Boy was a mere plateau of technological advancement, which allowed some technological wiggle room. Meanwhile, the iPad was considered such a technological ideal that many companies just copied its basic design, killing off true evolution until, say, the Nintendo Switch. That leaves a gap of about 22 years in which handheld gadgets for kids were really freaking experimental and interesting. And with that in mind, today’s Tedium looks back in time at 10 portable electronic toys—some well-known, some obscure—that highlighted how creative toy-makers were when the canvas was completely open. (And we’re including commercials for each, because, hey, commercials!) Maybe you played with a few of these back in the day.

Wouter Groeneveld ☛ We're Out Of Olive Oil
In other words, what is the average olive oil consumption rate per capita (in Europe, since Europe produces 70% of the world’s olive oil)? The biggest bulk consumers are without surprise Mediterranean lands, with Greece leading the charge by far: Greece 16, Spain 13, Italy 11, Portugal 8. These numbers vary depending on the source: that was Statista’s, yet the International Olive Council came up with something similar, putting Cyprus in-between Italy and Portugal.

Internet Archive ☛ Digital archives: a time machine for the web
At least that was the sixth reason until the New York Times revised it with a stealth edit. When you read the article today, choosing death as a solution to a debt burden has been replaced, but there’s no mention that this article was revised. The timestamp is still the day it was originally published.
If not for Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine, this discrepancy wouldn’t have been caught. The Wayback Machine is a digital archive of the [Internet], and as such, it captured multiple previous versions.
The [Internet] is constantly being revised in ways that allow history to be rewritten and a shared sense of truth to be questioned. With AI-generated disinformation, the potential to exert control over the future by rewriting the past has never been greater.
This week we’re exploring how digital archives are crucial in developing a record of truth in an ever-changing web.

The Hill ☛ Why the TikTok bill is constitutional
The poster child for this bill is TikTok, which is owned by ByteDance, an affiliate of the Chinese government that literally has an internal Chinese Communist Party committee as part of its governance structure.
The act is a no-brainer to resolve this issue, because it merely implements foreign ownership restrictions to enforce divestiture requirements at the app layer. It follows tried-and-true legal frameworks that America has implemented in a wide array of contexts. Indeed, the U.S. has applied foreign ownership restrictions for telecommunications services, broadcasters, banking, energy — the list goes on.

Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) said the TikTok bill passed by the House last week is not “actually addressing the issue.”
Khanna, who voted against the bill, argued on ABC’s “This Week” that while the two national security issues cited in the bill are “legitimate,” the legislation still does not address them. He said the two issues at hand are whether the data can get to a foreign government and whether the Chinese Communist Party has an influence on algorithms.

Hackaday ☛ Shôtarô Kaneda’s Motorcycle, For Real
For fans of the iconic anime Akira, there’s only one way to traverse the mean streets of post-apocalyptic neo-Tokyo, and that’s the futuristic mount of motorcycle gang leader Shôtarô Kaneda. It’s a low-down feet-forward machine with, we’re told, “Ceramic double-rotor two-wheel drive,” which we’re guessing is some kind of hybrid electric drive with what sounds like a gas-turbine motor. Over the years, there have been a few different attempts to create a real version of Kaneda’s bike, and we’re pleased to see the latest from ヲタ工房「ポンちゃンネル」(Ota Kobo “Ponchanner”). It uses a twin-cylinder Kawasaki motor in an entirely custom-made frame, with dual single-sided swingarms front and rear and hub-centre steering.

Daniel Pocock ☛ Flashback 2003: Debian has always had a toxic culture
People are estimating that Debian has spent over $200,000 paying women to be volunteers through Outreachy. At the end of their Outreachy programs, they all disappear. Would it be better to use this money to get advice about fixing the culture? The payments to women are an admission that Debian culture is bad and women won't have anything to do with it voluntarily.
Despite everybody knowing the culture of the group is the root of all evil, they continue to look for scapegoats. If they can just punish one more person, everybody else will behave nicely, Debian will be "safe" and women will join.
Here is an email from the debian-private (widely leaked) gossip network giving an insight into the culture in 2003. It looks a lot like the culture today. In 20 years, despite all the forced resignations and expulsions nothing really changed.

43% of Left-wing nerds support the ban of opposing political ideas
Censorship of online discourse is a major point of disagreement between the political Left and Right.
Tech organizations perceived as "Politically Left-leaning", tend to support the banning of ideas from Online publishing platforms (Social Media, YouTube, Forums, etc.) -- Mozilla's infamous declaration of "we need more than deplatforming" being one such example.
On the flipside, most moves towards less censorship are regarded as being "Politically Right-leaning" -- a great example being Elon Musk's purchase of Twitter, and subsequent loosening of some censorship rules on the X / Twitter platform.

Tom's Hardware ☛ China filed 25% more patents than the U.S. in 2023 — heavily sanctioned Huawei led all companies worldwide despite bans
China-based entities led all other countries in terms of the total number of patents filed. The total number of international patent applications filed globally was 272,600 in 2023, down 1.8% from 2023, but China remained on top with 69,610 applications, easily outstripping the United States, which had 58,823.
The WIPO determines the number of patent applications filed by an entity through its Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) system. PCT patents are filed by entities wishing to protect their inventions in multiple countries with a single international patent application. Some companies do not file for a PCT patent application with all of their inventions, so while the WIPO rankings are important, they may not reflect all the patent applications filed in all countries.

But that can become a problem, he said, when digital locks are also used to stop one brand's products from working with another's.
Canadians can't currently bypass those locks without potentially violating the Copyright Act — and that can carry a serious penalty.
But change could be on the horizon.
A bill that was passed in Parliament last year and is working its way through the Senate would alter the Copyright Act, making it legal to circumvent digital locks in the interest of interoperability.

In this blog post, we wanted to describe a few of the ways the fair use doctrine has helped us build our library.
