databreaches.net Admits It Lost Data (the Site Lost Pages) After Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) Attack, Now It's Blocked Behind Proprietary Riddles and Walls of Clownflare
Databreaches.net has not been having a good (let alone productive) month, to say the least. I exchanged several messages with the webmaster and author of databreaches.net and he told me nothing was lost (after he had restored something). We recently wrote about the databreaches.net incident [1, 2] and the statement about losing nothing was not accurate. Maybe the backups contain lost pages, but as it stands at the moment, as per this latest notice:
On March 8, DataBreaches experienced a massive DDoS attack. At the time, I thought all posts had been restored and it was just a question of reuploading images. After hearing from researchers who cannot find old posts, however, it seems that yes, there are likely many old posts that did not get reuploaded and some posts where images are missing. I’m not sure what the issue was with importing, but something obviously didn’t go perfectly. I cannot give you an ETA as to when all old posts and images will be restored because that’s not a priority. Some people have written to me about the recaptcha fouling up the RSS feed. Yes, it does, but the site is still getting massively hit on a daily basis, and the recaptcha helps keep the site online. Please just come visit the site the old-fashioned way for now.
Once again, my profound thanks to those who have reached out to offer me help.
It is obviously not good for a site that bemoans data breaches to suffer data loss. No matter the cause. Let's hope they recover all the missing pages some time soon.
To be clear, databreaches.net did not lie. It just wasn't aware of the issue. █
