Africa as an Important Reminder That Eradicating Microsoft Doesn't Go Far Enough
Africa is dominated by Android and therefore by Google, the world's largest or most far-reaching surveillance apparatus, working at the behest of the United States. About 70% of Web-connected devices in Africa use Android and many that aren't connected probably run GNU/Linux because Windows is not even a contender outside laptops/desktops.
That ought to get us all wondering; what would Africa be like if more than 90% of the devices there were controlled by Google? Would users be in control of their computing?
No, not really.
Take Ivory Coast for example. Android reached 62% in April or around the time we last assessed the data from there. When it comes to browsers, Mozilla and Microsoft, which once dominated the market, are down to about 2% territories. Sadly that means that almost everyone uses proprietary Chrome, which is a monoculture problem, not just a proprietary (or OSPS) problem.
Ideally, if our top goal is bigger than "get rid of Microsoft"*, we need to teach people to choose and use devices that obey them, not GAFAM. Otherwise we'd move towards a non-accomplishment. █

* We definitely should, there's nothing wrong with wanting that, but we can think already about "what comes next..."
