Anniversaries and New Beginnings
"I see more impunity, more secrecy, more retaliation for telling the truth and more self-censorship. It is hard not to draw a line from the US government crossing the Rubicon by internationally criminalizing journalism to the chilled climate for freedom of expression now" -Julian Assange
TODAY we have some celebrations here (personal, an anniversary), so perhaps not as much time as we'd like to devote to articles. Dr. Andy Farnell will also be back. Andy's latest article got several bits of feedback, constructive feedback. People made suggestions both to us and to him.
We're pleased to see that despite heckling Julian Assange's talk went OK. It looks like he will certainly be doing more of the same and one question from the audience directly alluded to this. October 1st 2024 was just the beginning, the Council of Europe Committee Legal Affair was just the party privileged to be the 'kick-starter' (in gratitude for its ardent support).
We're now a month away from this site's anniversary, so a few weeks from now we'll begin preparations. This happens around the same time as Xmas preparations. Techrights was founded only a couple of weeks after Wikileaks (pure coincidence; Tux Machines was founded only a week apart from Phoronix as well).
Many things in the world move in the wrong direction, but being positive and productive is still possible. The world needs more transparency and far less secrecy. Julian Assange's famous saying is that if lies lead to war, then truth can help promote peace or prevent war. █
