Social Control Media is Narcissism
Software guru Pieter Hintjens quit Twitter before his death (he came back momentarily only to soak in departing messages) and said Twitter was rewarding mobs and cults. He even said about one example: "It is a Facebook movement, narcissist to the core."
In more recent years (after Hintjens had already died) Professor Eben Moglen warned that the impact Social Control Media had on people's attention (or the ability to focus) was very negative. It metabolised people, he argued. I myself took a giant step back in 2020 and thankfully Techrights had no eggs in the Social Control Media "basket". When it became very apparent how Twitter sought to make money I quit 'cold turkey' and never looked back. I miss absolutely none of it; I only regret not quitting sooner.
Nowadays there's a lot more literature and even press coverage explaining the harms of Social Control Media. We hope that the Free Software Foundation (FSF) will see the light too. █
