Why We Stopped Publishing Videos (for Now)
We'll be back to it, but probably not this year (multimedia habits have changed)
Between 2020 and 2022 we published over 1,000 videos. It mostly started in December 2020, the second COVID-19 lock-down in the UK. It was a way to cope with slow news cycles and excessive indoor time. There are several reasons we barely make videos anymore; among them: 1) the machine on which I record is slow as it has been up for over 600 days already. 2) we lost track of the habit. 3) it's very hard to access YouTube without bloat and also increasingly difficult to download videos from it. 4) we already covered a very broad range of topics in video form, so any newer videos would likely cover overlapping things (i.e. repetition). 5) it seems like fewer people these days watch videos unless they are very short and hence rather pointless (like #shorts
in social control media).
We still have all the same workflows and scripts for making videos, but at this point in time it's hard to envision doing any more lengthy videos any time soon. Our articles, which are readable in bulletins, Geminispace, and the Web (HTTP/S) are more accessible than videos and are therefore more effective, a better use of our time/capacity.
We'll probably get back to videos one day, but it's hard to say when or to what extent. █
