Gemini Links 02/07/2023: Dividing People and Cohost Rave

      • What is a pronoun.

There is a full stop, not a question mark, at the end of this page title because it’s a statement. “What” is a pronoun.

Hello and welcome to a brief essay on pronouns.

      • March update 2023 - Big Changes!

Hola! Happy Hacking to all hackers, DIY, Creators and tinkers out there. Ok so i did it again, but this time I was kind of depressed for some personal reasons.. Feeling much better now and I saw my friends in Alicante for the city holidays this year in June 2023.

      • Where does robust racing become unfair? 🖕🏎️🤬

At a kart track last summer, I came out of a corner much faster than the driver in front and went to pass her on the left. She moved over to block me, but I was already alongside. I had to go onto the grass, then slow to avoid a wall. Talking to her afterwards, she didn't seem to think she'd done much wrong.

In Austria today, a similar thing happened when Verstappen tried to pass Perez in the F1 sprint race. He got pushed onto the grass.

What are the rules? Oddly, they aren't written down. But some things are generally agreed.

    • Politics and World Events

      • Pulling out the mental roots

All we need is for people like Lorie Smith and you to start thinking in terms of *people* (unqualified) instead of different kinds of people (gay, black, white, etc.) and the problem ends instantly.

In other words, stop dividing people IN YOUR MINDS....

        I'm not holding my breath.

    • Technology and Free Software

      • Padding against AI

I'm not sure we talk enough about the impact of generative AI on our epistemic ecosystems (as Lorraine Code calls the intricate interconnection of systems of information flow that make it possible for us to know beyond our senses). I'm not convinced there's any merit to the vague Terminator-like threats of AI taking over the world, but I do see its potential to worsen some existing trends.

        [...]

So you could pad a résumé with ChatGPT. But take someone a bit more creative and desperate. There is an industry of "vanity press" in academia, made of journals that will publish almost anything you send them, for a substantive fee.
      • Internet/Gemini

        • BBS June Archive

I have exported a Gempub ZIP archive containing all posts and comments made on bbs.geminispace.org during June 2023. You can find it on the new "BBS Archives" page: BBS Archives

In the future, I plan to add new monthly archives there without any separate announcements.

        • 040 - Cohost

Cohost is nice. It has images, for once. Images are nice. And its developers are actually paid to work on and moderate the project. That's a whole topic I could dedicate a lot to. Because I do have a lot of thoughts swirling around my head about what the future of the internet can, and should, work like. Cohost sure is one of the better websites, at least. Worker cooperative of queer people. Good stuff.

oh yeah i can also edit part way through a line without having to use wacky Vim commands. nice feature right there. because that paragraph up there is kind of a wreck. oh well. i guess it'll just have to be bad.

        • Missing the point

I'll be replying directly to Stack's post as Textmonger's reply is more just directly in "here here!" and not adding much besides "I too am totally missing the point". So you too should really think about what you agreed with and how its probably the worst take on this entire protocol. That includes adding tables to gemtext.

* Gemini (Primer) links can be opened using Gemini software. It's like the World Wide Web but a lot lighter.

There's no guarantee that writing the truth will result in an audience (or readership), but over time - in the long run - people generally gravitate towards what they know or feel to be crude truth, not just what's comforting (albeit false or self-deluding, usually groupthink dictated from above)
