Summary: Enquiry about the #1 priority of Techrights now that the site has covered many of the important areas
AS we approach the 14,000 post milestone (our wiki’s front page now exceeds 3,000 non-cached requests per day) and look back for a bit, we realise the most of the critical patterns have been covered by now. Moreover, Novell is really quite dead in the news and Linux is basically winning the operating systems fight, even if it is being called “Android”. Our priority now, as the site is rather mature when it comes to scope it has covered, is to have software patents withdrawn from the United States, or at least prevent them from spreading to other counties. Are there any objections to this being a priority? █

It is an admirable goal to prevent or revoke patentability of software. . Go for it.

That is an excellent priority for Techrights software patents are a means to an end that may be accomplished in other ways. Techrights is intimately familiar with some of the villains and some of their goals. We know, for example, how Microsoft uses patents to exclude competitors. Techrights has covered state and private corruption which also was designed to eliminate Microsoft competitors. So, Techrights has a lot of experience and can continue following the issue and help to eliminate software patents. There are other threats, such as tivoisation and laws like the DMCA which also threaten software freedom. Techrights should also understand the strategic goals of software owners, which extend beyond software monopoly rents. Non free software is a disaster in banking, medicine, voting and government operations because it gives software owners undue oversight and control and that control must be thought of as a goal of non free software owners. Software patents are an injustice but they are just a small part of the larger injustice of non free software and the power it gives the rich and powerful over the rest of us. These other issues will continue to be of interest and should be showcased as time allows.
