David Heinemeier Hansson (DHH) Realises What He Should Have Decades Ago
3 days ago:
THE other day/night (in IRC, 24/7) a nice lady told me that DHH (above) and his company had moved to GNU/Linux. DHH is very influential and his opinionated views are sometimes controversial in Free software circles, including the habitual or casual praise of Apple. So seeing that DHH is moving away from Apple is kind of a big deal. Most people know him because he created Ruby on Rails, but he did a bunch of other important things.
DHH isn't the only one. I know (in person) people who made a similar transition (away from Apple) for similar reasons or for very different reasons. Some were fed up with Apple restrictions and surveillance (e.g. client-side file scanning) and some realised they don't need to pay Apple "premiums" (or "tax") to get what they already have in GNU/Linux distros, sans the marketing and "smug factor".
Heck, Apple barely makes these brightly-lit Apple logos at the back of laptops anymore (what a waste of battery life, as the user does not see this light; it's pure showoff like neon lights beneath one's car).
DHH has a lot of following online. We hope he can persuade many Apple customers to at least consider the possibility that GNU/Linux is worth exploring/adopting.
For the record, I never owned any Apple gadget or computer. 20+ years ago in my office at work they provided me with a Mac (aside from my main 2 computers; one run Mandrake) so that I can help academic staff and provide hands-on instructions.
When it comes to environmental factors, Apple is just about the worst one can get and this is deliberate. Apple is destroying the planet, for profit. █
