Techrights in the Coming Decade: The Patent Angle
AS noted 'in passing' some moments ago, I had decided to outline priorities and, having discussed the matter over Mumble, it seems there's some consensus on the strategy - what needs to change, what can be improved, which aspects need further emphasis etc.
The outline for this mini-series includes patents, software, speech, and community. Those are areas worth focusing on, as their growing importance and relevance persist.
Patents are why we started. We keep saying that. In 2006 we were about two words, "boycott Novell", and this was all about one thing: Patent collusion between Microsoft and Novell. We all know how this "deal" worked out for Novell.
Patent-related journalism barely exists anymore. A lot of what remains of it is composed by lawyers (or law firms) for self-promotional purposes and it's hard to write about the topic in the absence of external sources that are valid and present new information. Hence, we remain very much reliant on EPO leaks.
The priority will remain the publication of suppressed information rather than rehash of existing facts (we can use Daily Links to relay those). We're still proud to say we have a 100% source protection record, so we hope EPO leaks will continue to arrive, even for a decade to come. Next month marks 10 years since we began covering EPO leaks. █
