Cross-national Load Time of Tenth of a Second
That's how Pingdom sees it anyway
THE "new" site turns 1 about 5 weeks from now. We've managed to shave off load(ing) times by a lot! As noted in the last article, server load is about 100 times less than before. Looking how long it takes to retrieve the front page of Techrights (from London to Frankfurt; there's also London to London), it's about 120 milliseconds without any CDNs such as Clownflare. We consider this to be quite the achievement. A year ago it took several seconds to load the front page.
Remember that there is an aspect of availability/uptime, even security, herein. Sites that can serve fast can also serve a lot more and are thus more robust to DDoS attacks and other kinds of cyberattacks. What happened to Windows weeks ago was actually a very serious security incident, causing tens of billions of dollars in damages (just this one incident!) and killing people.
Anyway, let's get back to basics.
This comes to show that CDNs aren't really necessary (make the site leaner and safer instead). What's needed is common sense, not bells and whistles. █
