IBM is Misleading IBM Shareholders
Earlier this year we argued and showed that "IBM's CEO Ha[d] Become a Stochastic Buzzword-Generating Machine". It was about "AI" and "quantum".
Nothing has improved since then. IBM is still all about vapourware and buzzwords. IBM has also made Red Hat a buzzwords vendor - as we explained a number of times earlier this month (sometimes Red Hat promotes buzzwords along with Microsoft's proprietary software).
Two days ago we wrote about IBM's shares (stock) falling. IBM has since 'recovered' (in Wall Street), at the very least by name-dropping more buzzwords. Sceptics and what seems like IBM insiders understandably joke about it: "Regarding today's quantum announcement, it seems some investors have misunderstood exactly what we announced. Some seem to think we can do away with the mighty quantum hardware and replace it with AMD chips 🤦♂️"
Hours ago someone added: "Today’s announcement was a typical “snake oil salesman “ message. Fools fall for it."
In another thread somebody wrote: "I do not get it. IBM announces they "stumbled onto" how to get AMD x86 chips to run an IBM quantum algorithm and plan to build a quantum system by 2029?! WTF?! How does this justify an 8% stock gain in 1day? This is the 2nd or 3rd time IBM has announced something with AMD and every time I am putting my bets on the brilliant AMD CEO Lisa Su who was the G Man's (Gerstner's TA tech assistant for a year). Is IBM gonna buy AMD? Is AMD gonna buy IBM? IBM remains adrift like a big iceberg."
These shareholders don't seem to understand the contradiction between "quantum" and x86.
It's sad that the technology sector is now financially controlled by technically clueless people.
As a reader put it to me some hours ago, "one of the recent blog posts accurately identified a big problem with what passes for tech media these days; the focus has shifted over time away from those two make tech to those who merely finance it."
A lot of the media participates in this deceit; yesterday we showed a new example from The Register MS.
"Way too many column-inches are wasted on pointless hype narratives," the reader added, "especially about LLMs."
It is just another "pump-and-dump" market rally bubble and the media gets paid to inflate this bubble.
Meanwhile, Richard Stallman (RMS) keeps calling LLMs "bullshit generators", as he did some days ago in Germany (the media in Germany focused on this particular element of his talk). █
Richard Stallman: "Chatbots are Bullshit Generators"
During a presentation at the TU Munich, Richard Stallman advocates not sacrificing free choices on the altar of possible digital conveniences. In front of around 400 spectators, the founder of the Free Software Foundation (FSF) calls on students to only use and develop free software.
States could not afford to cede their sovereignty to large corporations, Stallman emphasizes to a full lecture hall. “We should fight this. We should ensure that our state institutions remain sovereign.” The city of Munich is not living up to its responsibility for the independence of administration with its departure from free LiMux.
The 72-year-old, who paved the way for GNU/Linux with the free text editor GNU Emacs and the licensing models essential for the “four freedoms” of programming, is currently touring Europe. In Munich, he appeared at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and the Technical University, where a lot of free software is developed for internal use, but proprietary programs like Microsoft 365 are also further promoted.
