NOT TOO LONG ago we saw yet another national (ish) branch in the UK becoming a Microsoft vassal, just like the NHS, the BBC, and BECTA.

The Crown has some obligations also to taxpayers, so choosing something which is not proprietary ought to be a requirement. When the London Stock Exchange moved to Windows it soon made many headlines due to failures (not just the Microsoft PR and anti-Linux campaigns) and it no longer made the headlines after moving to GNU/Linux because things just worked perfectly.
